Complete on CD, at last!
This is the first time that the UK and USA releases of the Goldfinger soundtrack have been combined into one complete album, featuring both the Goldfinger instrumental theme and the 4 tracks that inexplicably featured only on previous UK issues.
Beautifully remastered, it's just a shame that the original master tapes are no longer available to expand the album further as has been done with some of the other Bond albums. Even if you already have all the tracks on the previous CD issues, this is worth buying for the quality remastering alone!
Best movie for many, but not the best soundtrack...!
Many people (Bond fans and general public alike) cite "Goldfinger" as their favourite 007 movie. It's obvious to see why ... however, the soundtrack is not actually as momentous as the film. Yes, the title track is classic Bond music, but the rest of the film music is just that - background film music.
The first 3 tracks stand up on their own here, but beyond that the Goldfinger soundtrack slips into the shadows so that the acting can take centre stage. This is not a criticism; all I'm saying is that other Bond films had much a stronger impact when placed into a CD player (such as "On Her Majesty's Secret Service").
I owned the previous version of this CD in the 90's, so later upgraded to this version - which has been remastered and has four new (previously unfeatured) tracks. The first two new tracks don't really do that much (i.e. read above) but it was interesting to have the 'Laser Beam' track. Again, this is nothing special but the laser beam sequence is a classic Bond moment on film, and it's now interesting to also have it on CD.
Overall, if you're a Bond fan then you need this CD on your shelf. It's worthwhile owning, but remember that there are many dimensions to Bond - for example, if you're a fan of the books then "From Russia With Love" is often cited as a favourite; likewise, if you're a fan of the movie soundtracks then "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is generally regarded as the gold medal winner (not Goldfinger).
