Customer Reviews
fragile and god-like
i'm one of those younger generation sort who always told my parents and my grand parents i wouldn't be caught dead listening to this man... ring of fire to me was a comedy track, damn those bad advertisemnts i saw as a kid they ruined this man for me until i was in the back of my teens...
i'm a lover of music of all kinds now and i'm relishing the day my kids poke fun of me, bt i will sit them down and say 'listen to this kid...' and place this cd in the high tech sound system of the future...
because this man is fragile, this man is a god, this man is history and i love this record
from the opening you get the feeling maybe mr cash was wondering when his time would come, the feelings there but not so morbid, it's message now on reflection is a farewell of sorts, the cover of hurt won many alt-fans with NIN... but fiona apple, personal jesus...
this album will be my gift to my children
Buy, Listen, Love
I've always liked to pick and choose my Johnny Cash, some I love, and some I really don't get, but this whole album has such an incredible feel to it, even the songs I'm not so keen on without a doubt have their place.
Songs like Hurt and In My Life suddenly take on different meanings. In My Life, penned by the Beatles before they were thirty, talking about their childhood, suddenly becomes the tragic/beautiful recollections of an old man who knows he doesn't have long to go. Hurt, one of the angriest songs I know, becomes one of the saddest.
A wonderful, sage retrospective over a lifetime of emotion. A must for anyone with ears.
Eye Opener
After his greatest hits this was my 2nd JC purchase. Imagine my surprise when I heard lyrics for the first time in songs that I have known since I was a boy. For instance `In My Life' and `Bridge Over Troubled Water' - both given a new lease of life by the Cash Man. Given songs like the Cash-penned `Man comes Around' and covers of `Hurt' (which may have brought you here) and Stings `I hung My Head' this CD can be called the sound of a man dying. But dying with dignity and pride and humour (Humour in Sam Hall). `Danny Boy' was a bit of a surprise too having grown tired of my uncles bad renditions through my early years. It now moves me almost to tears while it used to move me almost out of his house. This CD is great. Look that word up in a dictionary. Great.
