Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Amazon.com Much to his credit, John Hiatt has never strayed very far from the bluesy garage rock roots of his Indiana childhood. That fact is raucously underscored here, a gritty collection that finds the veteran singer/songwriter co-crediting his longtime band, the Goners (guitarist Sonny Landreth, bassist Dave Ranson and Kenneth Blevins on drums) for the first time--and for good reason. While Hiatt's songwriting efforts are typically strong throughout, with gems like "Almost Fed Up With the Blues," "My Dog and Me," "My Baby Blue," and "The Most Unoriginal Sin" (originally recorded by Willie Nelson in 93) showcasing his tough wit and tender heart, this is decidedly a band effort from the rollicking first notes of "Uncommon Connection." Recorded live in the studio, Hiatt and the Goners evoke everything from chugging Sun Records' shuffles to swampy Delta blues, early Ry Cooder and the Band, all of it informed by the almost telepathic sense of interplay these musicians have developed over decades of touring. This is easily the most overtly rocking album of Hiatt's career, but one that hasn't sacrificed an ounce of soul for its joyous energy. --Jerry McCulley Product Description 18th release to date from John Hiatt was recorded in just 8 days with guitarist Sonny Landreth, bassist Dave Ranson and drummer Kenneth Blevins. More high quality Hiatt5
A new release from John Hiatt is a big event in my house, and as usual I have not been disappointed. After a brief first listen I was certainly not blown away, but after three or four plays I am sure this release is as good if not better than the best he has given us, such as Slow Turning and Perfectly Good Guitar. A fine variety of songs from the catchy My Baby Blue, to the slow blues of The Most Unoriginal Sin, to the up-tempo rockin' of Circle Back. If you are a fan, buy it immediately, you wont be disappointed. If you arent a fan, buy it anyway, you soon will be,.

Too much Landreth3
I always thought that JH could do no wrong but then I bought this. The songs are the usual Hiatt quality but where the CD falls down is the the overblown and unimaginitive guitar of Sonny Landreth. He seems to have elbowed his way in to every little space that he could and tends to make each song sound the same as the previous one which is a shame, especially when you know how John's previous recordings.
As big a fan as I am I have to give this one the thumbs down.
In case you get to read this,..... Sorry John.

What can I say?5
I love John Hiatt, I just love everything he does as almost every single song was written form the heart and comes from vast experience from a life that at times has certainly seen some real bad times. However… for some strange reason this album did not really do anything for me on the first few listens. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood or something, I’ve still not worked that one out.

This CD is now almost worn out with the constant playing I’ve given it, I’d go as far as saying it’s maybe his best album to date. Wonderful tracks like “Window on the World” and “How bad’s the coffee?” will just not leave your head, and don’t bother trying to dismiss them as it just won’t work! From the opening track, the excellent upbeat “Uncommon Connection” to the albums close every single one’s a winner! Can’t wait till the next offering.
