Customer Reviews
Sharp tunes
Although I've never been a fan of Northern Soul, I've always loved the 'mod' sound of the early sixities. This album (I've got the vinyl version) sets out to recreate the atmosphere of those Soho clubs where the first wave of mods grooved to soulful sounds.
Almost all of the right sounds are covered, organ-based jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and of course soul - Make me Yours by Bettye Swann tugs at the heart while there's no doubt what Suger Pie de Santo means when she sings Do The Whoo Pee.
Where this differs from many of the Northern Soul compiliations that are around at the moment is in the quality of the selection.
None of these songs were hits but they all deserved to be.
MOD Classics
There are some essential MOD tracks here for anyones collection. The first two tracks are a little slow but then it thumps into 'She's Looking Good' the title track and there's no going back. You can imagine yourself dancing away in a Soho club with a smart suit, polished shoes and well dressed girls, all engrossed in the great sounds. If you get tired of dancing by track 13 then you can stand at the bar and tap your feet to the hip sounds and take in the atmosphere. It's well worth the trip.
