Quality stuff
This album has been out for 18 months now; videos of two of the tracks, "Nella Fantasia" and "Mal di luna" are played regularly on Classic FM-TV and, although I'm not too sure about the final high held-note of the latter, they are good indicators of the quality of the rest of the album.
Although biographical information is elusive Summer is British, is classically trained and fluent in most of the languages she sings. She is slightly more mature than some of the young talent that the record companies are pushing at the moment; she has a golden voice and crystal clear diction, and the choice of material here is designed to be classical, crossing over to ethnic, so we have variations of Beethoven, Richard Strauss and Vivaldi, as well as Dvorak and the Gypsy Kings.
The arrangements and backing instrumentation are courtesy of some stellar names - Nick Ingman, Richard Cottle and Nick Patrick to name just three - who have worked with top names in the classical and rock genres, and they have ensured that everything you hear, music, sound and production, is luxuriant without being over-lush or saccharine, and, with just two exceptions (for me anyway), the whole album works beautifully and is a delight to listen to, especially in the evening.
The two exceptions are, strangely, the two English language songs, Sting's "Fragile", which is not in the same league, melodically, as the rest, and "Cavatina", where the phrasing has been altered slightly and does not bear favourable comparison to the unbeatable original of Cleo Laine's. However, these are but small gripes; for once the purchase of an album on the strength of television promotion has proved to be a happy one.
Tha voice of an Angel
My goodness what a beautiful voice!Given the "Big names" involved with this production one buys this cd in anticipation of something rather special, and one is not dissappointed.
This lady is something rather special and I am amazed that nothing else has been produced during the last 18 months.
Unlike a previous reviewer I am enraptured by the productions of Cavatina and Fragile, I think that Summer delivers a beautiful new slant on the tones of Sting and the adaptation of Cavatina works extremely well, for me.Whenever I listen to the crystal clear voice of this lady I cannot help but imagine that if there were such creatures as angels then this is what they would sound like. All in all a good selection, well backed up and sublimely sang.
My favourite album
I bought this album after seeing Summer on classic FMTV, and have played it almost every day since. Mal di luna is beautiful, and I would buy the album just for that one track, but the rest are lovely too. Second favourite is Sposa Son Disprezzata, Aranjuez and Nella Fantasia equal third. A great album to relax with and forget your troubles.
