Customer Reviews

some garbage weighs heavy here but great aside from that 3
Another year and another royal rumble, simply put,an event worth getting out of bed for on paper, but fails with two matches that should be deleted from living memory forever.
The night starts off well with a match where the winner gets a spot on the royal rumble match itself so the stakes are high, the big show goes up against brock lesnar, there is a story leading up to this that isnt that magic but the match itself is good and lesnar showcases again that at this juncture he was a machine that didnt compromise, this was a good match.
Next up we got a match that again was good, the tag team champs lance storm and william regal went up against the multiple time tag champs the dudley boyz in a highly skilled match with a ruthless streak stamped on top.
Next up was a match thats vignette leading into it lasted longer than the match that featured little wrestling, one would feel more excitement watching vera ducking jacks block off in corrie, here we had a stepmother vs stepdaughter match with a terrible storyline, the creative team should have been marched out the back and blindfolded and gunned down for this effort,we had dawn marie vs torri in a shambles of a match, time to make a cup of tea then.
Next up we had a close to twenty minute balls up of a match and it was for the world heavyweight title match, champ triple h against scott steiner. This was a dreadful match due to steiner being a bit too good for his rival yet being awful at the same time,he botched the odd move ,he did belly to belly until the crowd starting chanting boring and triple h looked bemused at how this match would look to the world,on and on it went with no excitement or real identity,it just dragged and triple h couldnt help his rival in making this look good, steiner looked the part but is not main event quality in any way, terrible and agonising to sit through this,i believe that the US army have this on standby to torture bin laden if he is ever captured.
But hold on a second,we have redemption next,a match with so much skill and swagger and intensity that one should surely stand to applaud such greatness, the champ kurt angle went up against chris benoit,oh what a contest, finishing move after finishing move, counter after counter, one way then the other ,crowd going here and there in their favour,oh this was good, this had it all, this was special,oh see it for yourself.
The main event of the night was next, the royal rumble match itself,30 men,15 from smackdown and 15 from raw and a fantastic, captivating match, great performances from everyone really, names worth dropping for their quality include chris jericho,A-Train,lesnar,rob van dam, matthew hardy and kane, plenty of quality on this and a great outcome, yes this was an event that had some jaw dropping stuff but the two matches i criticise take some of the shine of the apple so with that in mind this gets a 3.5 out of 5 rating.

CONTAINS THE BEST AND WORST OF 20033
This is an interesting PPV as it contains what I consider to be both the best and worst of the year. In one corner we have the Angle/Benoit match that was so good the entire arena gave it a standing ovation. This is my personal MOTY for 2003, a technical classic up there with all the other greats. We also have the Jericho/HBK feud start to build with Jericho eliminating HBK from the Rumble via cheating, this would climax with a 5-star match at WrestleMania two months later after it simmered a bit. Finally we also have the Rumble match, the first one after the brand extension, which actually made it more interesting as we saw RAW talent "compete" against SmackDown talent in a quasi-brand war.

On the bad side of things, we got a Steiner/HHH match which is great for getting yourself to sleep just by counting the botched moves instead of sheep. Then we have the Torrie Wilson/Dawn Marie match which, thankfully, ended their feud over Torrie's "dead" father Al Wilson but we had to go through this dud of a match.

Then we have the one curtain-jerker match with Big Show/Brock Lesnar and a midcard match with Dudley Boyz/Lance Storm & William Regal to round everything out, resulting in a PPV that is stangely balanced between good and bad.

Great in sum places4
The angle and beniot match is great for this dvd and saves its be-hind but i personelly like all royal rumbles but thought the endding with lesner was a bit to much "SET UP" but in all a great dvd soput ths baby on your shelf.
