Amazon.co.uk Review
Chicago's Alkaline Trio rip off more playful emo punk on Good Mourning, as Matt Skiba's profane poetry yields another set of sad yet extremely fun songs. The band's overt pop instincts were muted on past albums, notably their debut Goddamnit!, but Mourning isn't nearly so abrasive. Draped in silky production, the band's painful odes to lost love and bittersweet joy lose some edge (witness the toothless opener, "This Could Be Love"). Still, the band has rarely been tighter, and the likes of "We've Had Enough" have enough juice to fuel mosh pits throughout the land. Skiba can make you feel bad about yourself no matter how good your mood, a talent that only true emo masters wield with such authority. --Matthew Cooke
CD Description
'Good Mourning' is the fourth album from Chicago-based emo-punk band Alkaline Trio and the follow up to their 2001 release 'From Here To Infirmary'. Working with producer Jerry Finn, the band have produced another record full of dark, ominous pop-punk, littered with catchy melodies and insightful lyrics.

The best there is
Let me start by saying I don't really like punk. Generally speaking I prefer the haunted or slayer, but this band truly is something special. This is their greatest album to date, even beating the superb 'from here to infirmary'. The utter contempt that matt skiba and co show for the abysmal current punk scene in the superb 'we've had enough' show that this is a punk band smart enough to not require milking each morning. Other higlights include the brooding 'continental', the incredibly catchy three cords of 'fatally yours' and the gentle post-good riddance closer 'blue in the face'. Overall this album is heartfelt, honest, catchy, accesible and downright genius.
the new dark side of pop-punk!
ok this is my review on Good Mourning by Alk 3, its what i wrote for college a couple of weeks ago, its a tad biased in some places cos i absolutely LOVE alk 3. Enjoy...
Good Mourning is the latest album from the Chicago-based punk band, Alkaline Trio. Alkaline Trio are Matt Skiba, guitar and vocals; Dan Andriano, bass and vocals; and drummer, Derek Grant who also sings backing vocals.
The Alkaline Trio have been known for their drunken antics and Satanic beliefs over the years but they have now slowed down the drinking, explained their looks on Satanism and have now beautifully created their fifth album, Good Mourning. After the major success of their first album on Vagrant Records, ‘From Here to Infirmary’(another great album) Alkaline Trio are back. From Here To Infirmary was Alkaline Trio’s critically acclaimed UK debut, it’s filled with great pop-punk rifts crossed with dark lyrics, such as singles ‘Private Eye’ and ‘Stupid Kid’, the album is well brushed and well produced.
Good Mourning has showed how Alkaline Trio have pushed the boundaries; they’ve shown how far they can go. With a new drummer (Derek Grant, former Suicide Machines drummer) their sound has changed once again, first starting off sounding like any other punk band, then jumping over to the pop-punk wagon and now are in their own league. This album contains 12 tracks each strong and with its own personality with portrayals on death, Satanism and twisted aspects on love. The album also includes two UK bonus tracks. They have so far released two songs from the album, ‘We’ve Had Enough’ a catchy melody with lyrics based on hardcore punk band, The Misfits. The other release ‘All on Black’ which gives a good insight to the whole feel of the album with its sinister lyrics and gothic punk melody.
Both Andriano and Skiba have different singing voices which harmonize surprisingly well together like they always have. Skiba has the more rough and smoky voice after years of heavy smoking and drinking and Andriano with the more soulful, deep, gentle voice.
Tracks to look out for this album include Continental, Every Thug Needs a Lady and Blue in the Face. Continental, a mixed-up love song; Every Thug Needs a Lady, a song of obsession and devotion sung by Andriano and Blue in the Face an acoustic preformed by Matt Skiba.
This album is for any great music fan, and should not scare off potential fans when being classed in the punk rock category. Such a well-mastered record shouldn’t scare off people after it has been put into a genre that is getting more and more criticism the older and older it grows. This is Alkaline Trio at their best and with an album this good, who knows how far they can go.
12 shots of pure brilliance
After discovering Alkaline Trio, by seeing their Private Eye video, I listened to From Here to Infirmary. It was one of the finest albums I have ever listened to. Good Mourning has that effect on me also, but even more so. Good Mourning has not been off my CD player since I got it. Opening with the loud and large rock anthems of This Could Be Love and We've Had Enough, the kind of songs that made them what they are today. Then comes the more melodic 100 Stories, with its catchy chorus. Followed by the well-written anthems of Continental and All on Black, perfectly cathcing Matt Skiba's great singing voice, with their brilliant loud and large choruses. Emma is a step into the more typical pop-punk genre away from the Trio's usual dark style. Fatally Yours and Every Thug Needs A Lady are more into the trio's normal punk style. Blue Carolina combines good riffs with a very catchy chorus. Donner Party is another of the simple well-written fun rock songs that made the Trio famous. If We Never Go Inside showcases Dan Adriano(Bass) taking the microphone and execute his good voice to a great song with a great chorus. The album ends with the excellent Blue In The Face, an acoustic solo effort by Matt Skiba, ending the album with the question, Your coffin or mine?
The verdict is as follows; Alkaline Trio do not disappoint on their follow-up to From Here To Infirmary, with a diverse collection of great songs, including their usual dark style and some new takes on songs also. Good Mourning is a must-have to any punk fan or Alkaline Trio fan. Take my word for it, if were not a fan of the Trio before, this album could very quickly cahnge your mind.
