Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
First Lady, the title of Lisa Maffia's debut album, probably refers to her position in the So Solid Crew--in a recent documentary on the group she was the one who came over as most clued up. However she's yet to reach Ms Dynamite's status of first lady of UK garage, and this album won't change that. Keeping in step with her garage cohorts (Ms D, Craig David), Maffia's quick to ditch the form that made her famous and opt for R&B, because that's where the real money's to be made (especially in the US). Never mind that neither Ms Dynamite nor Craig David (or any other UK R&B act save the offbeat Floetry) have done well stateside. Still, there are and have been good chart hits on First Lady: both the bouncy "All Over" and "In Love" (with its kind of dated Spanish guitar) have gone into the Top 10.

The album is patchy, swinging from pop, to garage, R&B and even a touch of rock. "Women of the World" is a kind of warm, obviously maternal track (she's a single mother) and "Down" goes for the slinky funk of Missy Elliott and her many imitators. That's not a criticism of the production, which is generally solid, but her producers have had to work hard to give Maffia her own identity. It's only on the last track that she ever recaptures what she had on So Solid's "Oh No (Sentimental Things)" and "21 Seconds". Here, finally, she sounds British, she sounds confident, she sounds herself. --Jake Barnes

Mixing the well known So Solid production style of tuff beats and basslines with Lisa Maffia's sweet vocals, the album adds a new dimension to the glamourous UK R&B sound. Customer Reviews

The first lady delivers an amazing first album!5
Lisa Maffia part of So Solid Crew, enters the U.K'S urban scence with an album so fresh its unbeleiveable. The album features Lisa's massive top 15 singles ALL OVER and IN LOVE and features another 13 other tracks. The other tracks include music influences of ragga, r'n'b, hip hop and even funk. The different types of music makes the album so good, and with Lisa's sweet voice, it just tops it all of. I advise you to buy this album as it has been on my cd player ever since I bought it.

So Solid's First Lady tries her luck with a mixed debut.4
When Lisa Maffia emerged unexpectedly, most people thought she was just another R'n'B former band member clone. Then she released 'All Over' and amazed everyone, making it to No. 2 in the charts. The next single ' In Love' however is a slushy piece of R'n'B, which differs completely to the party track that was her debut. Tracks like 'So Solid Party' and others are almost as good as All Over ,some better! If you put Eve with Ashanti with Pink and Beyonce you get a new breed of star ,a strange mix but it works, because we now have Lisa Maffia. With two singles under the belt, Lisa provides a mixture of solid talent. Pop,a gallon of R'n'B, Rap and a hint of gentle rock makes First Lady , a true title for the first lady to experiment that.

Lame1
This is truly a lame piece of work. I have read about Ms. Maffia quite a bit in Blues & Soul, though living in the US, had never actually heard her. With great expectation I placed this in my player, and heard one track after another featuring a rapper and lame vocals. There are truly only maybe 2 songs that are "solo". What a disappointment...
