Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Following up the energetic, one-two punch of RUST NEVER SLEEPS and LIVE RUST, Neil Young takes a more understated routewith 1980's HAWKS & DOVES. On rustic tracks such as "LittleWing" and "The Old Homestead" (both written in the mid-'70s), Young revisits his HARVEST era with a spare sound that relies heavily on his distinctive voice and acoustic guitar. As the album progresses, its scope widens both musically and lyrically; "Stayin' Power" is a jaunty, piano-driven tune about the power of love, while "Comin' Apart at Every Nail" isa guitar-laden hoedown that comments on the US government. This surprisingly patriotic tone (especially coming from a Canadian) This politically minded theme takes on a surprisingly patriotic tone on the album's closing title track, the Canadian songwriter's flag-waving tribute to the United States. A highly underrated record, HAWKS & DOVES features some ofYoung's finest songs of the '80s.
Customer Reviews
Highly underrated Neil
This is really worth getting hold of - the first side is all acoustic tunes, some dating as far back as the mid-1970's, and they're all crackers - 'Little Wing' and 'Captain Kennedy' are two of the great unknown Neil Young songs. The country stuff of the second side is less powerful, but still contain some interesting and funny things. Definitely worth checking out.
Underrated !
I had avoided this album because so many people had written it off at the time and subsequently, what are they on?
I picked this up recently and by cricky if this is not the best acoustic album I have heard from Neil Young. The album positively hums with atmosphere; the album contains some of in my opinion Neil Young's best acoustic songs. 'Little Wing' and 'The Old Homestead' from the aborted 1975 'Homegrown' project sound just as good as the newer songs such as 'Hawks and Doves'
Worth the wait?
I had never heard this album before, but have been a fan for years and couldn't wait for its release.
The first time i opened up the case and put on the cd i was thinking wow! this is SO good. Little Wing and The Old Homestead are truly great Neil Young tracks. But then it all gets a little too country for me and the lyrical content wains slightly. Don't get me wrong, on their own, tracks like Capt. Kennedy and Union Man are great, but on the album they seem to interrupt the flow and feel that was set at the beginning. After such a great start its a bit of a let down, but i still rate it at 4 stars because in my mind, even when Neils' writing is average he still has that special quality to his voice and playing that makes him stand out from the rest. Worth waiting for. Definately. It'll grow on you. It has me.
