Smokin'
Ok I have to focus on the items content and features, so I guess I musn't mention my last family holiday or the last sofa I bought. So pay attention...buy this CD.
Question... do you like funky horns ...obviously the answer should be yes, Tower of Power please. There are three, yes three ginormous slabs of Funk from the Tower horns. Alone this would be a reason to purchase this compilation. However add to this some dirty Hammond (B3 natch)and added wah wah, then you'll not be disappointed. Special mention goes to Maria Maldaur's "Midnight at the oasis" ; it's one of those tracks that you hear on the radio and go I wonder who that is? In this case it's just a girl called Maria (cue song)- whilst lacking excessive Hammond or wah wah, it is as good an excuse for a quiet night in with glass of red as you are likely to find this side of Angelina Jolie popping round for a corkscrew.
Most folk (myself included) won't recognise the majority of names on this CD - obscure being the operative word, but that is no reflection on the sheer quality. So get into those purple loon pants and strut your funky stuff. If you like the funkier end of Little Feat or Santana (before he invited freeloaders to play on his records) then this is the one for you.Speaking of Santana - his brother's band - Malo - also appear.
Alternatively - just buy it, play loud and give your neighbour some cracking music to listen to.(It is also ridiculously good value ie cheap and bril.)
I commend this CD to the house.
Not all great but what is is fantastic
Not every one of the tracks is a winner but there are enough here that hit that great folk/funk groove to make this an outstanding comp from those Warner vaults people a superb buy. Sometimes I think I'm in some weird place where I'm the only one who likes soul/funk, dance, rock AND folk - how can anyone like all of these things in these segregated times?! And then along comes a crop of songs that prove I ain't wrong! In fact, any compilation with the dancefloor stomping 'Vehicle' by Ides of March is good with me but make it through to Labelle's masterful Moonshadow towards the end and you'll have enjoyed yourself immensely.
