"Aside from a camera that's a bit iffy... it's a totally immersive game. The combat is superb. 80%."

High speed robot Manga action!
Zone Of The Enders was one of the first games ever to come out on the PS2. It needed it too, the PS2 had been hyped as a super machine but was launched with a series of substandard games, Zone Of The Enders finally gave you the opportunity to feel like you were in control of a real next gen game. There were downsides though, the entire game felt half finished, just as it got going, the game ended! On a nasty anticlimax against the ultimate Inubis, you get dreadfully outgunned but 'rescued' and the game finishes. When reviewed in magazines, the reviewers glossed over this fact and gave it a nice 90% score (incredibly) due to it containing a Metal Gear Solid 2 demo!
So a few years down the line and we're delivered this, Konami's big hitter early 04. And tell you what, its cracking. EVERYTHING you wished that ZOE1 was, this is. Amazing graphics, high speed battles with hundreds of robots swarming around you like flies as you shoot, slash, grab scenery and smash it into them. Fantastic. The depth of graphics is so much better than the original, gorgeous snow effects, wonderful particle animation. Imagine fighting against and orbital frame in an arena made of ice, and as you two battle away the ice collapses and breaks around you as you fire lazers, missiles, dance around each other fencing. Its jaw dropping stuff.
The plot has been ramped up a bit, cut scenes are done using the gorgeous in game engine or via lovely Manga sequences (which came about from the Anime spin off series which you can find on DVD here). In certain sequences of the original ZOE, you spent ages staring out of Jehuty's cockpit with ADA yattering away to you. This time you get nice little Manga projections (similar to Metal Gear's codec sequences) where characters interact and develope the story. Coming to the story, its light years ahead of the original, now having an entire Manga series to mine for ideas, the entire concept seems fuller, there are more characters, more drama, its all oozes the same class of story telling which Metal Gear has. The story is nicely complex, flinging the main character Dingo into the middle of a huge scale struggle for power between Earth forces and the remote outposts of the Mars resistance outfit BAHRAM. The fight has been swinging towards BAHRAM forces thanks to the developement of Orbital Frames, huge flying battle robots, which outgun the Earth forces somewhat.
The gameplay can look a little daunting from glancing over the manual, but the game provides VR training which walks you through Jehuty's capabilites. Once you get into the game, it only takes a little time to get the hang of things.
All in all, I think this is a fantastic improvement over the original, its exciting and adrenaline pumping. Concerns over gameplay length? Well Metal Gear 2 was over in about 8 hours, but it was such a rewarding game to play, same for this. Plus its always fun to replay the game, relive the set pieces and stories again. You also get a VS mode to battle 1 on 1 against the computer or a friend, and an Extra Missions set to find during gameplay, which gives you more oomph for your money. DO check this out!
Brilliant, different hyperized mech game
Brilliant mech game that is different from anything you've ever played (apart from the inferior ZOE 1). Amazing graphics with effects that could stand up to Xbox and the fastest PC. Intuitive controls and a sound camera. Great story with anime cutscenes and terrific presentation. Main story mode takes 8 hours for normal gamer on normal difficulty, with loads of replay values from extra missions and hidden mechs to be found that can be used in the excellent 2 player mode. Great, varied different game, that most people will love, but those who have to have quantity over quality should avoid. Hideo Kojima's best game. BUY IT NOW. Best PS2 game of 2003.

MASTERFULL
Gameplay: 9.6
BIGGER. BETTER. FASTER. These three words are located on the back of the games' DVD case, and I fully agree with it. The games' environments are extremely bigger than the previous game, with a wide variety of enemy mechs players will have to fight. The gameplay is a lot better with more weapons to use, additional attacks, and more maneuvers that players can perform. Finally the game is a whole lot faster than the previous game. There is so much going on at the screen at once, it might be hard for players to keep up, but that will never be the case. Jehuty moves a whole lot faster than before, which can only be a good thing for you and a bad thing for any enemies in your path.
Graphics: 9.6
Gorgeous, Beautiful, Stunning, and Magnificent! The game oozes with graphical prowess; words cannot even fully describe what you will be viewing. The use of cel-shading is phenomenal, all of the enemies on screen at once, and particle effects; this game really pushes the power of the Playstation 2 to new heights. If anyone thinks that the Playstation 2 is dead, tell them to view this game once, and see what they have to say then!
Sound: 9.1
Konami didn't leave in the option to have both English and Japanese voices. This might upset some people, but the English voices are really good here. They bring actual feeling to what is going on in the game, unlike the first. The sound effects and music used is also really good!
Difficulty: Medium
The game can be a little overwhelming for people who did not play the first one. But the learning curve is not that hard. There will be some enemies and bosses who will give you a run for your money, but what is a game that does not have any sort of challenge?
Concept: 9.4
The game takes a lot from the original game, than expounds upon it making it better. There have been a lot of mech games, but none of them have been as fun, or high quality as this franchise. Konami has taken this genre into a new and bright future!
Multiplayer: 9.0
Konami included a verses mode. This mode is not as great as a full fledge fighting game, but it is a great incentive to continue playing and beat the game to get all of the mechs and stages. There are a lot of different mechs to choose from, even enemy mechs.
Overall: 9.5
Why are you still reading this? Go out and pick this game up immediately! The game is that good, and it would be a shame for you not to have this in your Playstation 2 library! The game gives you a really good story line, and when you beat it, there are always the extra missions and the verses mode to keep you occupied for a long time. Enjoy
