Albuquerque's finest return!
The first single from sophomore album 'Chutes Too Narrow', The Shins release the standout track (not to mention a slice of glistening pop perfection) "So Says I". With more than just a passing resemblance to the Beach Boys and other 60's guitar pop heroes, as well as more modern post-rock cult bands such as Built To Spill and Modest Mouse, the lead song from this 3-track single is so up-tempo and sickly sweet you can easily overlook the fact that it's a song about despair as opposed to happiness. For anyone familiar with the Shins, this sounds like it should be from debut album 'Oh, Inverted World' rather than the more mature follow up.
Also featured on the CD are b-sides "Mild Child" and an alternative version of "Gone For Good". The former is an acoustic, atmospheric song not unlike Spiritualized in sound, laden with reverb and effects which doesn't quite meet the Shins' normal song standard (presumably this is why it didn't make the album) whereas the second b-side is an alternative version of an acoustic song from 'Chutes Too Narrow', this time stripped of it's production and with a ragged, sparse drum track. Whilst it sounds like it should be a mess, this works perfectly and what you get is a lo-fi gem.
Even if you have the album, it's definitely worth picking up a copy of the single to boot.
Refreshing.
