Amazon.co.uk Review
Being Somebody builds on the success of Liberty X's debut and is more of the same pop-soaked R&B: raunchy but in a child-friendly format. Liberty X have matured into a major-league pop act and their sound has not yet become jaded, unlike so many bands on the same circuit.
There is little here that stands out as amazing but by the same token there is nothing that stands out as bad. The album opens with a short musical skit bigging them up and continues with the first two singles, "Jumpin'" and "Being Nobody". These are clearly standouts, but the rest of the songs still hold their own.
With the UK charts currently being dominated by US pop-R&B, the influences on here couldn't be more apparent and nowhere more so than on "Whatcha Doin' Tonight", a funky electro-rock/hip-hop number in a frighteningly similar vein to Christina Aguilera's "Dirrrty".
Being Somebody is a decent collection of songs with good production but Liberty X are still a long way off their US counterparts. --Steve Beefmark
CD Description
BEING SOMEBODY is the best selling 16 track album from UK pop group Liberty X who continue to grow from strength to strength confounding their critics who saw them as a one hit wonder. A classic example of "manufactured" Brit pop at its best!
Customer Reviews
Being Somebody??? Damn right!
It ain't half been a bad year for Liberty X; Brit Award, sell out tour, ivor novella award, double platinum album etc...the list goes on. Now with the release of their highly anticipated second album, 'Being Somebody' on the way...can they match that success? I think so!
1. Intro (Being Somebody)
This is only 20 seconds long, but instantly you can tell the American influence 'Being Somebody' has taken. (Can't really give it a score).
2. Jumpin
You've all heard this now. Definitely the best party song on the album! (Personally my favourite liberty x song to date) 9/10
3. Being Nobody
This was the first single to be released of the album. Very cool! But it's probably the odd one out on the album, because of its electronic sound. 9/10
4. Everybody Cries
Without a doubt the BEST song on the album! This is a killer ballad! It's not your typical pop band ballad; it's very mature with a full orchestra! Vocals are superb! 10/10
5. Watcha Doin' Tonite
Uptempo dance number. Very catchy with a solid beat. The verses sound a bit like Christina Aguilera's 'Dirrty', but that's a good thing! It's certainly single material. 8/10
6. The Poet
At first I was intrigued by the title of this song. So I was anxious to hear what its about. And its superb! Nice ballad with a cool piano catch. Good song. 7/10
7. I'll Be Remembering
This is VERY rnb! I really couldn't believe it was Liberty X when I heard it. I think people will be very surprised! Its soulful and sexy. I really like it, but I don't think Liberty X's younger fan base might appreciate it as much. It sounds a bit like TLC's 'Waterfalls'. 9/10
8. The Last Goodbye
Nice song! Cool guitar catch at the beginning. Jessica sings really fast in this, but its well class! The chorus is irresistibly catchy. 8/10
9. Let Go
I didn't like this one at first, but I do now! It's the rockiest song on the album, yet it's very electronic as well. Cool sound effect used throughout the song. Sounds perhaps a bit like 'State of Mind' by Holly Valance. I don't think they'll release this, but it certainly gives the album variation. 7/10
10. Forever
Cool ballad! Michelle sings beautifully at the beginning. I don't really know how to describe this one. The drum used gives it an African sound. It's not your average ballad. 7/10
11. Close Your Eyes
I have to be honest. I really like Liberty X, but I really don't like this song. I found it too boring. I don't know. I know some people who really like it. You'll have to hear it to make up you mind. 5/10
12. I Just Wanna
This is a fun uptempo song. Probably the furthest POP on the album. But still fun to listen to. This is a grower! 8/10
13. Impossible
AMAZING song! Kelli sings like an angel in this song! Very soulful and meaningful. Good lyrics, good tune, good song! 9/10
14. Take Me Home
This song has a latin feel to it. I actually like it quite a lot now. I wasn't too sure at first, but again it's a grower. 8/10
15. Story Of My Life
Good song! Its well catchy, and its got a nice rhythm. Not single material, but still a very good track. 8/10
16. Maybe
WOW! This is a phenomenal power ballad! Kelli and Kevin sing main vocals in this, accompanied just by a piano. Superb vocals and lyrics! Sung beautifully! Very sad and emotional. Brilliant way to end the album. 10/10
All in all, I think 'Being Somebody' is a spectacular album! Liberty X have definitely grown vocally and musically! A much more mature album! I not only recommend this to Liberty X fans, I recommend it to everyone! Not just pop fans...rnb fans will be pleasantly surprised! Deserves number 1 without a shadow of a doubt!
A must buy!
After listening to Liberty X's new album 'Being Somebody' I can clearly see that they have changed their image from a once garage/Pop band to a more mature RnB band. They have worked with various RnB producers which is noticable in the album, each track is completely unique in style.
There are of course the up-beat dance tracks which they have been renowned for, like Jumpin' and Being Nobody, however the album also includes some powerful ballads such as Maybe and Forever, these are not the same pop ballads like Holding On for you and No clouds but are much more mature which i know will be favorites on the album.
My favourite song on the album is definitly Everybody cries or Maybe, Everybody cries is quite a slow song, which shows off the band's great voices, after touring the UK the band thought it was important to include live instruments in the new album, this is very noticable in Everybody Cries with fantastic violin backing which compliments the powerful song which in my opinion should be their 3rd release of this great album. One of the songs "I'll be remembering" is so RnB i orignally thought it was an American track by TLC or Destiny's Child.
Liberty X have really broken away from any manufactured pop tracks and are expressing their real talent in song writing etc,
With many great songs, 2 top 10 hits and a great new style i give this album 5/5 a must buy.
Nothing Special
A distinctly average release from Liberty X, lacking flair and originality. The up-beat numbers are hugely disappointing, with "Jumpin" and "I Just Wanna" suffering from dire lyrics. However the ballads and the RnB numbers are much easier on the ears. "I'll be Remembering" comes close to recreating the class of "Just a Little" and is a personal favourite on the album. "Maybe" is a beautiful ballad capable of making the hairs on the back of neck stand on end. Other than these gems the album lacks credibility and the edge expected from top artists like Liberty X. A pleasant enough album but nothing special.
