Now that Dave Grohl has gotten through the intense scrutinyleveled at the Foo Fighters' debut, this follow-up finds him flexing his creative muscles a little easier. Forgoing theautocratic approach of FOO FIGHTERS, THE COLOUR & SHAPE allows the other members of the band a greater amount of influence, which quickly becomes evident. The punk-pop nuggets outnumber the thrashier moments on this record. Nevertheless, Grohl's time on the D.C. hardcore scene is never far from thecreative process, whether it's the first squeals and squawks that pop up around the hooks and screaming vocals of "Hey,Johnny Park" and "My Poor Brain" or the alternating, Nirvana-like dynamics of "Enough Space". Elsewhere, the dreamy popof "Walking After You" (recorded in one take by Grohl at Washington, D.C. radio station WGNS) and "Up In Arms" rubs shoulders with the Catherine Wheelish sheets of guitar flowing through "My Hero".

A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour and the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There is even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars", whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. --Rickey Wright

greatest songs ever
i mark this album as songs, not the album itself, as some other reviewers have also stated, foo fighters are a singles band, and not an albums band. this album is impossible to like as every single track on it is amazing, notably, monkey wrench, my hero, walking after you, and especially evelong, my favourite song of all time. if you want an album thats a bit differnt from your usual rock, this is for you, if your already a foo fighters fan, you'l already have this.

probably their best
an excellent album, laid down when the creative juices were really flowing (it must be so hard the longer you go on). the album is on my listmania greatest list. to be honest all the foo's album could be up there. i can't imagine anyone looking at these reviews who's never heard of the foo fighters, or there music. well if you haven't i'd say it's definately rock, the sort of thing your mum probably wouldn't like (but thats not always true). like a lot of really good bands they're difficult to pigeonhole, and have their own distinctive sound. if you haven't heard "everlong" listen to that first. after that you'll most likely want to hear the rest, and you won't be disappointed.
