Editorial Reviews
CD Description
In 2001, THE RAT PACK LIVE AT THE SANDS was released, a live album from the early 1960s capturing the onstage antics ofnotorious cohorts Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and DeanMartin. Two years later, THE ULTIMATE RAT PACK COLLECTION picks up where its predecessor left off. Disc One features a different live recording from the same era, capturing the trio in all their martini-swilling glory. The second disc is aDVD of another performance from a few years later. Even though the video finds the Rat Pack nearing the end of its tether in 1965, the chemistry and onstage dynamism is just as remarkable.
Both discs feature the three singers performingboth alone and together, and engaging in plenty of clowningaround with each other. The DVD is heavier on classic Sinatra tunes, but the first disc has even more Dean-and-Frank schtick. That said, the footage of Sammy running through "One for My Baby" in the styles of about a dozen different singers is an uproarious moment, and to see the three men in action together is to truly understand the nature of both their artistic powers and their personal appeal.
Customer Reviews
Entertainment of the highest order!
When it comes to sheer entertainment, nothing can top the meeting of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. on a stage. With an orchestra, a live audience, and plenty of booze on hand, results are nothing short of mesmerising.
The CD contains material which has been culled from a week-long engagement by the Pack in November 1962 at the Villa Venice in Chicago, and seamlessly put together as though it were one show. The sound is of a similarly high standard to that of the fairly recent 'Live At The Sands' album, but with a very different programme of songs. Fantastic stuff it is too!
The DVD is the real gem here though, as it contains the only fully taped video performance of the guys in action. Recorded in 1965 at Dismas House, St. Louis, this concert has been released previously in audio-only format, but the addition of video footage brings a whole new dimension. It should be pointed out that the DVD is in black & white, but please don't let that dissuade you, as it's an absolute corker. Johnny Carson (TV's The Tonight Show) serves as M.C. and referee for 90 minutes of great music and hilarity. You will be smiling from start to finish.
I cannot recommend this release highly enough, whether you are a seasoned Rat Pack fan or a complete newcomer, this will appeal to both, and everyone in between. I had high hopes (if you'll forgive the pun!) for this set, and I'm delighted to say that it really delivers. First class!
This is where the cool starts(and end's brother!)
Brilliant, Funny and Entertaining a real gem!!
The audio cd is of a high quallity with great performances and the comedy and impressions during the banter section between the three is hilarious and had me in fits of laughter, The DVD is all that with equally great performances and comic banter enhanced by the fact you get to actually see the performers and fully apreciate there stage performance and just how great they really were.
A must for every one !!!
Swing with tears
The first thing you have to say about this set is the value, for the price to get 90minutes of DVD plus a CD is excellent.
The second thing you have to say is Oh My God!
The guy that rates it as drunken rambling quite simply does not get it, this is the Rat Pack at there finest. The drunken acting combined with the sheer talent of performance is amazing. The show on the CD is superb and will have you clicking your fingers one moment then clutching your belly with tears of laughter the next.
But as one reviewer already stated the prize here is the DVD. I have personaly never seen the trio on stage, im just way to young. But after seeing this I can say im ok with that fact, it is the next best thing to being sat in front of them.
The quality of both are great, and the DVD is 90 minutes of sheer excellence especialy considering its age and the made for US tv factor. The guys just are the Rat Pack, what else do you need to know?
If you love swing you must get this, if you love them you must get this. But most of all if you love entertainment, you have to get this!
