Editorial Reviews

DVD Description
Charting the events within a small single-class village school over the course of one academic year, Etre et Avoir takes a warm and serene look at primary education in the French heartlands. A dozen youngsters, aged 4-10, are brought together in a rural classroom and taught every subject by a single teacher. A master of quiet authority, he patiently navigates the children towards adolescence, cooling down their arguments and listening to their problems with extraordinary dedication. Soon, however, he will have to say goodbye to those older students, who are now ready to go onto the state school in the local town.

Winner of a host of international awards, Etre et Avoir is a unique meeting of a director of remarkable talent and a man whose assured approach to teaching will have an impact, not only upon the lucky few children who could share his wisdom, but upon anyone he sees this extraordinary and heart-warming film.

Customer Reviews

Just beautiful...5
..nothing much happens and it is the quietness of this film (particularly compared to life with my own children!) that strikes you. The sense that here is a truly inspirational teacher, doing an excellent job quietly, calmly and with great love for the children builds throughout the film. Absorbing and wonderful..the patience of a dedicated documentary maker pays off.

European film at its very best5
What a truly wonderful film: a gentle and reflective documentary about a rural school, its teacher and children in the rolling beauty of the French Auverne. Beautiful "fly on the wall" showing the depth in everyday life. Hollywood could learn a great deal from European flim making like this.

This is a rare gem of a movie.5
The film is simply magic, and reveals to us both the world of feelings in the small child, and how a loving teatcher is able to give each child full attention and the tuition every child deserves to get in school.

It is a must for every teacher and parent in the world.
