Desert Sessions rivals if not surpasses Queens
What attracted me to this album was Desert Sessions performance on Jools Holland with the cool bass driven Crawl Home and the melody blues fusion of I Wanna Make it With Chu, which are both stand out tracks from the Desert Sessions Volume 9 & 10. Both tracks feature the sublime PJ Harvey whose vocal talents range from commanding in Crawl Home to the dawn right haunting of There Will Never Be a Better Time backed by folk. That is what is different from Josh Homme's equally excellent Queens of the Stone Age, there are mixtures of stoner rock such as the brilliant opener Dead in Love and Holey Dime. Listeners will also experience folk music and blue grass such as Im Here For Your Daughter and Creosote. Tracks such as In My Head or Someting and I wanna Make it With Chu both appear on future QOTSA albums (Lullabies to Paralyze & Era Vulgaris) respectably but both are in my opinion better through Desert Sessions. In conclusion if you are a fan of Queens of the Stone Age I implore you to acquire this album as it is that good and cements Josh Homme as a true talent among rock music to be able to pull something completly different out of the hat. We all know anyway the amazing talent of PJ Harvey and this is just another feather in her distinguished cap.
Desert Sessions 9 &10
Very good album - saw them on Jools Holland and heard "Crawl Home" that made me buy it - haven't been dissapointed!
I HEART THIS DISK
The Desert Sessions albums, recorded at Rancho de la Luna, are collaborations led by Josh Homme (QOTSA). This CD includes Volume 9 – “I see you hearin me” and Volume 10 – “I heart disco” For this instalment PJ Harvey has come along for the ride with stunning results. Her vocals are perfectly complimented by Homme’s all the way through the album. An outstanding example of this is on the brilliant “Crawl home” where PJ also cuts a cracking bass-line. Other high points on the album include “Wanna make it wit you” an upbeat pop-ish number sung by Homme with the irreplaceable PJ backing him up. “A girl like me” is arguably Harvey’s best song, her husky vocals are interwoven with a superbly atmospheric layer of sound, to create a catchy toe-tapping track.
“There will never be a better time” is truly haunting; hard to believe it was only performed once. Mr Homme aka “J-Ho” gets a well deserved break, with. Harvey wailing to a Spanish style rhythm, manically strum by Chris Goss (Masters of Reality).
In short this album contains something for everyone, from the insanely funky “Subcutaneous Phat” to the utterly bizarre “Sheperds Pie” (No points for guessing what this ones about!) This album is well worth a look, a marvellous creation that took a meagre 8 days to produce. Now go out and give this CD a Homme.
