Superb Music
It's hard to add to what the previous reviewer has said really.
These tracks are all taken from a Golden age when Rod was really at the top of his game and ably assisted by some of the finest musicians ever heard.
On his first 5 solo albums and the Faces albums (from which these songs are taken )you get wonderful takes on Rock n Roll , Blues , Soul and even Folk .It's all sort of thrown into the pot , mixed with a liberal sprinkling of alcohol (these boys loved a drink) and comes out the other end as ......fantastic good - time , balls to the wall ,SUPERB music.
If you don't know this stuff then this 2CD set is a great introduction.Once you've dipped a toe in the water then do yourself a favour and get the (even better) 3Cd set released last year (Rod Stewart - The Complete Mercury Recordings) which has all the songs from those first albums plus the singles B-sides and 5 rare tracks.
Happy times are in store if you do.
P.S. Did i say Rock n Roll, Blues , Soul and Folk ....forgot to mention that there's a bit of Country in there too!!!!

Best of times / Worst of times
It is so hard to review an album like this without coming off like a dinosaur, but good God! They just don't make records like the Stewart / Faces & the first Rod solo efforts anymore...

I must be only the millionth person out there who will tell you that all the weak pap that Rod has had on the radio the last 20 years is a disgrace to his past, a series of bad jokes, a literal destruction of everything that made him a star in the first place...

The last good song I heard from him was his collaboration with Jeff Beck on "People Get Ready"... and yet that was so mannered, so "this much and no more"...

All the while there are tons of songs on this album that are SO racous, SO tender, SO full of soul, SO full of HEART and transparent honesty, if you youngsters could only turn off the nihilistic death / goth / diva / rap that apparently you think is the center of the universe and just listen to this album with no regulating it to a smug "Oh that was just the way they were in those primitive days..." Damn it, just LISTEN to it and FEEL what your heart will be demanding you to FEEL... you will not only be educated as to what true rock is, I'll bet you will have it on your player nonstop for months, you'll finally grasp that what are called "dinosaurs" are instead timeless.

"Stay With Me" all by itself is just about the best Party Rock song ever recorded. You'll be ashamed of yourself for ever thinking Kiss was a rock band when you've heard it a few times and actually grasped what is going on in it.

And you see, that is what made the early 70s bands so amazing! They were not corporate entities; "brands" (as Gene Simmons has unblushingly referred to Kiss as)- they were BANDS, pushing the limits, skipping the damned trends and creating moods that dozens of weaker bands would be copying, ever weaker and weaker, for decades ever since.

I'll write no more. Too many of you are probably screaming that I dared dis Kiss that nothing I have said has penetrated your skulls at all. Your loss!

Rod at his very best...
Forget all that late 70's and onwards overblown nonsense, this is Rod Stewart when he was at his gutsiest rockin best.
All of this stuff was recorded while he was still a member of one of the all time greatest Brit-rock bands The Faces. Many of the songs were written by Rod and Ronnie Wood and there are some great covers which have been re-worked to the Faces blueprint sound.
Formed from the ashes of the Small Faces they were up their with the Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Who.

On most of the solo stuff Rod is backed by the Faces and you can hear that distinctive Ronnie Wood (pre Rolling Stones) guitar. If you like bands like Jet, Black Crowes, Primal Scream, Kings of Leon (and erm..The Stereophonics) etc you may have checked the Faces out already but if you havent this is a great starting point and the only Rod Stewart solo cd you will ever need....essential for any fan of great rockin' tunes. Good on ya Rod!
