VENGEANCE 2003
FIRST EVER ONLY SMACKDOWN PPV! AND PROBABLY THE GREATEST.
matches:
FINAL OF THE UNITED STATES CHAMIPONSHIP TOURNAMENT:
eddie gurrero vs chris benoit - 4.5/5 - This match was great and the fans were so hyped for seeing this match after watching from the beginning of the tournament and at the end of it all comes this: eddie guerrero vs chris benoit and even though this match lasts quite a long time every minute is worth watching.
jamie noble vs billy gunn 3/5 - For some of the most wierdest reasons the winner would get to have for a day torrie wilson and i know for a match this is very wierd but surprisingly entertaining.
a.p.a.'s barroom brawl - 5/5 - This is the first ever barroom brawl and this ppv has the honour of hosting this match because it is great. The participants are as follows: faarooq, bradshaw, brotherlove, kanyon, matt hardy, shannon moore, john and matt (tough enough 3 winners), doink the clown, los consiquidores, brooklyn brawler, funaki, sean o'haire and the EASTER BUNNY.
Plus in this match there are lots of bottles being cracked over peoples heads!
tag team championship:
charlie haas and shelton benjamin vs rey mysterio and billy kidman - 5/5 - This match was egreat and i could say that a thousand times because it is this match combines the two most popular cruiserweights and a normal tag team, from the moment the bell rings this match is packed with high flying action and also includes billy kidman doing a shooting star press of the top rope to haas and benjamin on the outside of the ring! This is a must watch match.
stephanie vs sable - 2/5 - basic catfight nothing special but a train gets involved and thats how the undertaker vs a train fued somehow starts?
undertaker vs john cena - 4.5/5 - this match was hyped up because of the deadman and a certain lesson in respect to john cena. This match is full of moves which are simply amazing and you cant forget john cena has his chain.
vince mcmahon vs zack gowen - 3.5/5 - the crowd totally for zack gowen and soon in the match you see zack gowen doing a moonsault onto vince which is pretty entertaining!!!!!
wwe championship:
triple threat match
kurt angle vs brock lesnar vs big show - 5/5 - This match was taken from the famous triple threat match at vengeance 2002.
In this ppv its the highlight match of the night and deserves to be remembered with signature moves being copied by the other person it makes this match great. And two of the most popular superstars in smackdown are included shame about big show though. AND DONT FORGET A 2 OUT OF 3 CHANCE OF A NEW TITLE HOLDER.
WWE Vengeance 2003
The first all Smackdown pay-per-view event, Vengeance, is considered by many to be the second best card of 2003, behind only Wrestlemania XIX. After the previous month's pay-per-view, RAW Bad Blood, didn't meet the expectations of many fans, Vengeance absolutely blew everyone away with a collection of five-star matches. On the DVD, there are actually no extras, usually there are a couple of bonus interviews and promos, however, Smackdown markets itself as a no-nonsense programme, with a reliance on almost purely match quality, and considering the quality of the matches at this event, Smackdown is a thriving brand. A real gem for any pure wrestling fan. The matches were as follows;
The opening match saw Chris Benoit and Eddie Guererro compete in the final of the tournament to decide the new United States Champion. Once WCW's secondary belt, likened very much to the Intercontinental title, the U.S. title was re-activated to serve as Smackdown's secondary belt. Many think that this match should have been placed higher on the card, being such an important match, and being of such amazing quality. This was a great effort from both participants, and gave excellent prestige to the U.S. title, fantastic.
Next up was Billy Gunn vs Jamie Noble, in an indecent proposal match, the stipulation being, that if Noble won, he got to sleep with Gunn's valet Torrie Wilson on Smackdown. Rather a strange storyline, this match had an extremely hard act to follow. However, both competitors do work hard to make this match entertaining, and it is.
Then came the APA Invitational Bar Room Brawl, not really a match, more of a fight. This was an excellent chance to show some under-carders on pay-per-view, but does have a rather predictable ending. Serving only seemingly as an opportunity for an interval, there are a couple of stiff stunts in this brawl.
John Cena is up next to take on the Undertaker, in a good match. Cena's pre-match promos are of an exceptional standard, and the Undertaker worked so hard in this match, it looked as if his contract was up for renewal. He really sold Cena's moves, and helped along Cena's push amazingly.
Next up was Stephanie McMahon against Sable in a mildly entertaining match,
Quickly followed by the contest for the WWE Tag Team Championships, Haas & Benjamin facing Billy Kidman and Rey Misterio. This match was truly spectacular. Real time was given for two of the best cruiserweights to ever step inside a ring to showcase some of their talent on pay-per-view, and it certainly worked well.
The brutal affair of Zach Gowen against Vince McMahon was up next, and time for Vince to further advance his evil persona. Despite having one leg, Gowen is capable of working an entertaining short match, and displays his talents here. A great effort.
And then we come to the main event, the Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship, the Big Show vs Kurt Angle vs Brock Lesnar. A returning Kurt Angle (now babyface) and Brock Lesnar create a good build-up, giving an extra competitive edge to this match, and a fantastic match it is. A main event worthy of topping a tremendous card.
Great matches make this card a classic. WWE Vengeance is pure brilliance, and is certainly a must see for any wrestling fan. An excellent event.
Great Pay Per View
This event was probably Pay Per View of the year, if not second to WrestleMania XIX.
WWE Championship
Brock Lesnar (c) vs Kurt Angle vs The Big Show - 8/10
Pretty good match, All three men performed very well and it was Kurt Angle's return match
Vince McMahon vs Zach Gowen - 6/10
I was surprised how good this match was. The crowd was really behind Gowen in this match and he pulled off some good moves
WWE Tag Team Championship
World's Greatest Tag Team vs Mysterio and Billy Kidman - 9/10
This was the second best match of the night, the two best cruiserweights on SmackDown! going up against Haas and Benjamin. Lots of fast paced action with a good finish.
Stephanie McMahon vs Sable - 3/10
This match was probably the worst on the card, It was quite pointless really.
John Cena vs The Undertaker - 7/10
A good match but with the wrong person winning. Great rap at the beginning of the match, WORDLIFE!
APA Bar room Brawl - 5/10
This match was entertaining even though no actual wrestling was involved. It featured Doink, Easter Bunny, Brother Love, Matt Hardy V1, APA, Shannon Moore, Spanky, APA, Funaki amongst others.
Indecent Proprosal Match
Billy Gunn (w/ Torrie Wilson) vs Jamie Noble (w/ Nidia) - 5/10
The proposal was that if Jamie Noble beat Billy Gunn, Noble would get to sleep with Torrie Wilson on SmackDown!. OK match with a few good points.
WWE United States Championship
Chris Benoit vs Eddie Guerrero - 10/10
This was without a doubt the best match on the PPV, Counter-hold after counter-hold. The two best on SmackDown! went at it, I wasn't really bothered who won, but there was a heel turn in this match. I can't get accross how good this match was, You just have to witness it.
All in all a great Pay Per View with some top quality matches.
I give the whole event 9/10.
