hard to beat summerslam
Summerslam 2003 could easily have been deemed laughable when they chose metallicas st anger as their official theme tune, such a rubbish track from a band who need to win all their fans back, yes thats a seperate debate so i will leave it there, regardless despite a few early flaws the event ironed itself out to become a great event indeed.
The opening match was solid without being vital to anyones collection,la resistance against the dudley boyz,a low key match when compared to some of the dudleys matches, nevertheless it had something going for it in places, the outcome was weak enough but would certainly keep the feud warm as the heat of summer faded.
Next up and strangely for the undertaker being so low on the cards order,we had the taker vs A-Train,this was a contest of strength and skill so the complete package really but on deeper dissection this wasnt that hot of a match,A-train is a good wrestler as is the taker but they didnt have a lot of in ring polish together and the match felt a bit lost in places, the outcome was good and stephanie mcmahon whipping the face of sable was a nice aftermath to the match.
Next up was a match that had plenty of storyline going into it,it was a match that would turn into a no DQ match, falls count anywhere match,it was eric bischoff vs shane mcmahon who was enjoying a rare push from the crowd at this juncture. The match didnt start off well, too much messing about if im honest but then with the appearance of stone cold the match picked up and the finale was trailblazing, glorious move indeed and made up for a farcial start to the contest, very good ending,i guess the old saying that the end justifies the means is actually true then.
Next up was a fatal four way for the united states championship, the champ eddie guerrero vs rhyno, tajiri and chris benoit. This was a good match, some of my fellow critics here have slammed this match but i liked it,i was impressed with rhyno in particular in parts,i cant always say that about a man that i have found sluggish and heavy legged in certain matches since his post ECW days, tariji also impressed so there was plenty to enjoy here, watching eddie and chris with an oppenent each at the same time in a submission move and the ref watching to see who would tap out first was first class and i cant say that i remember seeing that before, was simply excellent and the ending was corking as well.
Next up was a title match of some class,it was the champ kurt angle against a very vengeful and vince mcmahon backed brock lesnar, this wasnt as good perhaps as their epic battle a few months prior but it was great nonetheless. The match was filled with class and desire and frustration and near falls and the works really,it could have gone either way but in the end the skills of one man took over and that was that, and vince mcmahon got a birthday gift he wouldnt forget in a hurry, top job.
Finally, the main event,an elimination chamber match for the title, the second elimination chamber match in history after survivor series 2002.When compared to the afforementioned first chamber match this wasnt as good but as a seperate match this was engrossing stuff.
The final match before the headline event pitted once tag team champs kane who wasnt long unmasked for the first time against rob van dam in a no holds barred match, that should have led to a better performance in my mind from van dam who is an ECW great but he was against a man that had set fire to good ol' jim ross prior to this among other deeds so the anger factor ws in kanes court, this was a good match but didnt lift the roof of the building, the next match would!
This time,as in the first the champ was triple h and in his way was five rivals, chris jericho, bill goldberg, kevin nash, shawn michaels, and his fellow evolution member randy orton. This match didnt last as long as the first but was filled with quality yet again, kevin nash let himself down here after all the hype and bill goldberg was simply frightening as he smashed faces left, right and centre, when he speared chris jericho through the glass panel it was beyond superlatives, the outcome was pleasing or not depending on your views but no one can fault this really, great and a fine event, worthy of four very bright stars out of five.
A SUMMERSLAM THAT BALANCES THE GOOD WITH THE BAD
This PPV was in many ways better then many past Summerslam and in other ways not as great when compared to Summerslam's of the past.
The Good:
Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar; WWE Championship - two of Smackdown's top dogs deliver a exciting rematch of Wrestlemania XIX. The match doesn't have as big a hype and this time Angle's gone from bad to good, and Brock's gone from good to bad. After XIX, Angle had neck surgery, he returns and pins Brock in a triple threat match at Vengeance. A week or two later Brock attacks Angle who's the special referee in a cage match against Vince. Brock and Vince attack Angle and this is the stage. This match is a must see for any fan, but if you enjoy the Angle vs. Brock feud you must see this match.
Shane McMahon vs. Eric Bischoff - Just to see Austin beat down Bischoff and Coach is always great, not too great of a performance between Shane and Eric though Shane jumps off the turnbuckle onto the outside Spanish announce table.
Rob Van Dam vs. Kane - Probably the most intense feud of the summer after Kane unmasked and began attacking RVD. Nice hardcore match and you get to see Kane mess up a jumping attack to the outside, funny stuff.
The Bad:
Triple H winning Elimination Chamber, World Heavyweight Championship - I ordered this PPV, my second Summerslam in a row to specifically see Triple H lose the title, nothing else, I wanted either Goldberg, Nash Michaels or Jericho to win, that's how bad I wanted to see Triple finally lose, I was routing for everyone but Triple H and Randy Orton. Triple H holding the belt since December's Armageddon of 2002 even surpassing Wrestlemania XIX this was one of the most shocking moments to see a modern day champ reign so long! I was certain Goldberg would win but after a sledgehammer shot that came off soft and cheap Triple H won. The argument I make is that Flair hit Goldberg on the head three times with a sledgehammer two or three weeks earlier and Goldberg kicked out. Goldberg barely got hit in this match and one sledgehammer shot is pretty much all it took. Interesting. For Goldberg fans this is a must see on the grounds that Goldberg looked like WCW Goldberg and tore apart Michaels, Orton and Jericho. For Goldberg fans who remember Starrcade 98 this might bring back bad memories, and for others who ordered WrestleMania 2000 expecting The Rock to win and Triple H to lose, this might bring back more bad memories. If you really want to see Triple H lose and lose bad, see WrestleMania XX, I ordered it and loved seeing the Game go down! I still enjoyed this match, it was fast paced, hardcore and violent, non-stop action the entire time, another downfall is Nash's quick elimination. This is also Nash's final WWE match.
Taker vs. A Train - Another poor opponent for Taker two years in a row at Summerslam, A Train is good but his feud with Taker didn't interest me. Seeing Steph beat up Sable after the match is pretty funny though.
- Overall no true highlights that make this PPV special or a stand out, good rent for a quiet night or just wanting to see a entertaining PPV to satisfy a wrestling craving. This is in no way a bad PPV, it was exciting, but the fact remains that no classics came from this nigh
an OK event
match 1: 2\10 the dudleyz vs La Resistance a crap match its obvious who will win
match 2: 6/10 Undertaker vs A-Train this match is ok a good way to kick of the smackdown side of the card
Match 3: 7\10 Shane mcmahon vs eric Bischoff the ending id funny
match4:fatal 4 way match 8\10 a amazing match
match 5: 9\10 wwe chamnpionship match the best smackdown match
match 6: RVDvs Kane 5/10 RVD gets barely any hits.
