Kodak DX6490 - a smashing little camera5
Kodak have produced a gem of a camera here. It produces superb images, deals with awkward lighting conditions admirably and is very straightforward to use.

This is my first foray into digital cameras after being a sceptic for quite a number of years but the Kodak DX6490 is hard to criticise for anything. It looks rather imposing on the advertisements, but it is actually much smaller than the average SLR-type camera - small but beautifully formed.

Excellent for the digital camera novice (like me) and also those who want to be able to tinker (also like me!) due to the ability to switch from fully automatic to 'manual' mode. The 10X OPTICAL zoom facility is superb, although it is so good you'll need very steady hands at full zoom!

The battery life is also a big bonus - I'd heard that this was an achilles heel for many digital camera's, but not this one - the Li-ion battery seems to last for ages.

A further superb feature is the 2inch TFT display which is nice and bright and has good resolution. It is also very easy to zoom in to check whether the image is in focus once you have taken it.

If you are going to nit-pick, the mpeg movies you can take tend to pick up the sound of the lens refocussing in low light or if you move from one subject to another. Also remember to get an extra SD card as the camera memory can't store a great deal in common with most digital cameras (I'd recommend at least 128Mb).

Very good with some interesting points to note4
The DX6490 is very well designed and featured for it's price bracket. The camera feels good in your hand and the screen is by far the biggest I have seen on a digital camera.

The Kodak menu system is very simple and easy to use and contains most of the controls that an enthusiastic snapper would need. Some "prosumer" features are missing, but they are not the target market for this device. Save times in higher res modes can be up to 2-3 seconds.

Battery life is excellent, although there is no battery charge indicator, so when the light starts to blink you're almost out of time. The supplied charger is excellent for travelling.

Zoom functionality is very good, and best of all it's fast. In my opinion the digital zoom is far more useful than the likes of Sony, etc. Keep in mind that max zoom shots are likely to need a tripod.

Memory handling is good, with SD cards coming down in price all of the time and there is also 16mb of internal memory. It could just be enough for those "i've run out of space" moments.

Included software seems quite capable. Whilst rather large and resource hungry it actually has quite a few useful features.

Colours representation is not to everyone's taste, but the camera has different settings which are worth exploring to get the results that suit you.

Suitable cases can be difficult to find, as the camera is an odd shape. It certainly doesn't sit in your pocket easily, so a case or at least a wrist strap might be required if you don't like the supplied neck strap.

With a downward trend in the cost of high speed digital printing, the printer dock doesn't necessarily provide the best value reproduction.

excellent camera - unbeatable at the price?5
This is my 3rd digital camera. I previously owned a sony dsc-s70 and a minolta F100.

I was worried about 3 things when I purchased this - its size and the lack of a RAW or TIFF file format, and the fact it was made by Kodak. Then I realised that I have rarely used uncrompressed files on any camera I have owned and the camera is very small - definately fits in a jacket or coat pocket. As for it being a Kodak - stupid really - as the build and the software etc are all first rate.

In the 3 days I have had it I have taken 250 photo's and 99% of the them have come out sharp and clear - the colours are slightly over saturated but result in fantastic vibrant colour pictures.

Other things I love - 10x optical is great (forget the digital part), the use of sd cards - so you can view the pictures on an ipaq or palm, the 2.2" lcd, the ability to plug it into the printer dock, the electronic view finder changing to black and white when light levels are low, burst mode of 6 shots in under 2 seconds, the powerful flash and the ease of use.

Things I don't like, not supplying a case, not supplying a memory card - you will need a 128 or 256mb card (although the 16mb built in is as good as a card so thats not a real gripe) - overall nothing when it only costs £300!

In addition to this camera I would also recommend the printer dock 6000 as a great gadget and photo printer (looks great on the desk with the camera on top), use an a4 inkjet for enlargements but for 6 x 4 's the printer dock is brilliant.
