Customer Reviews
Simply......WOW!
This isn't going to be a long review because I'm not qualified; I'm not a hardcore EJ fan but I like his 'classic' era and I love the SACD/DVD-Audio formats. This is quite simply the best SACD I have ever heard, in terms of it's sonic attributes. If you have SACD capability and you are a lover of Elton John you HAVE to buy this anniversary edition!
That's all that needs to be said folks.....
Incorrect information, disc WILL play on a CD player!
chrissy_mouse is wrong, this SACD WILL PLAY in ALL CD players! (it's actually written on the case too.) HYBRID SACDs will play on both SACD and CD players alike, dedicated SACDs will only play on an SACD player. If you play it on a regular CD player, you won't experience the multichannel surround sound or high resolution sound that the SACD layer provides. The SACD stereo version on this recording has been both remixed and remastered.
The accompanying DVD, edited down from the Classic Albums version (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005Q2Z4/qid=1078147727/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/102-9312547-0003344?v=glance&s=dvd), is a standard DVD-Video, so will only play in DVD-video compatible players.
I think this goes to illustrate the level of confusion over formats like SACD. The music induustry needs to get its act together if they want multi-channel formats to survive.
Elton's masterpiece sounding better than ever
This 30th anniversary edition of Elton's magnum opus 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' now sounds better than ever on this Super Audio CD, but as such, you will need a SACD or SACD-compatible DVD player to enjoy it, as it WILL NOT PLAY on a conventional CD player!
This album represents what most people would consider the pinnacle of Elton John's career, and rightly so... but this album also showcases the very best of what Bernie Taupin could do as well, and between them, they fashioned a masterpiece, a masterclass in the art of song writing, which covers a huge range of styles and structures in the spaces of just 70 minutes.
Spawning the biggest selling single of all-time (Candle in the Wind) is no mean feat in itself, but even this track seems to just blend into the scenery when set against the backdrop of the many other classic tracks on this album. To be fair, the album does have it's fair share of, shall we say 'slightly bizarre' songs as well, (like 'Roy Rogers', 'Social Disease' and 'Jamaica Jerk-Off'), as well as some of Taupin's more 'interesting' lyrics like on 'Grey Seal', but far from detracting from the album, they add charm and are almost self-parodies at times ('Bennie And The Jets')...
This album used to be available as a double CD, priced around £20.. thankfully, the whole album now fits on one CD, and is priced very generously, in fact I would consider it a steal... The remastering adds value to the album as well, and the comprehensive liner notes are interesting and a must-have for any seventies rock train-spotter like myself. An interesting example is when Taupin reveals that 'Candle in the Wind' was not originally intended to be a specific homage to Marilyn Monroe, but could easily have been about James Dean (as opposed to Norma Jean...)
Above any other album that I know, this one is the perfect example of the phrase 'from the sublime to the ridiculous'. Sublime moments include 'I've Seen That Movie Too', 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', 'The Ballad Of Danny Bailey' and 'Harmony', and the ridiculous is ever-present, even tucked away in the lyrics of those four songs as well...
Add to this the DVD of the making of the album, which is a fascinating documentary, including some revealing footage of Elton and the band in their chateau in France where the album was recorded. This is actually better than the 'Classic Albums' DVD documentary (in my opinion), and sadly is not available elsewhere (as far as I know), which is a real shame for those without SACD-compatible DVD players..
