Amazon.co.uk Review
This 21-track anthology, The Very Best of Cher--anchored by her 1998 international mega-success "Believe" and its equally club-savvy collaborations with producers Mark Taylor and Brian Rawlings, "Song for the Lonely" and "A Different Kind of Love Song"--is indeed the first to contain all her No. 1 hits, stretching back to her epochal 1965 duet with Sonny Bono on the faux-Dylan "I Got You Babe". And if it short-changes her Phil Spector-rooted origins and a true perspective on her 1960s and 1970s career (though kitsch classic chart-toppers "Dark Lady", "Half-Breed" and "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" are all here) to focus on her string of 1980s and 1990s pop successes in service of writers such as Diane Warren ("If I Could Turn Back Time") and Desmond Child ("Just Like Jesse James"), it's good to remember that, according to the pop soothsayers, none of them were even supposed to happen, let alone make her an icon for a whole new generation. It's a tribute to sheer, fashion-defying willpower--and as unlikely an argument for the notion of "the singer, not the song" as one is likely to find. --Jerry McCulley

The Design of Four amazing Decades
Since Cher first appeared as an awkward hippy with her husband Sonni Bono as the duo Sonni and cher, she has carved a career which is truly the stuff of legend. Cher has sung the biggest selling female single in the UK,"Believe", has made countless fabulous records which have been of te rock, pop, dance and even cowboy style genre and she even had a brilliant career as an actress winning an academy award. This album has brilliantly captured the magic of Cher's fantastic career.
The first track "Believe" ,which topped the UK charts for seven weeks, won a grammy and sold over 1.6 million copies in Britain alone is most certainly chers biggest hit. This brilliant dance track has Cher's powerful voice with brilliant dance beats and is a definition of fantastic dance music. itwas recorded for Cher's first dance and biggest selling album ever, "Believe".
"Strong Enough" starts off like a mournful ballad but then turns into a rousing dance track of confidence telling the world how strong Cher is and how you can't bringh her down. This reached #5 in the UK and was also off the "Believe" album.
"If I Could Turn Back Time" the shout along anthem which allowed Cher to prove just how strong her voice is was one of the greatest songs of the rock era and reached #6 in the UK. Though not her greatest hit i feel this is Cher's greates song with amazing lyrics, powerful vocals and strong rocky guitars.
"The Shoop Shoop Song" was Cher's revamp of an old Betty Everett classic and she made it so fantastic that it topped the UK charts for 5 weeks. This cheery and uplifting song was on the soundtrack for Cher's comedy movie classic "Mermaids".
"Just Like Jesse James" was Chers cowboy song which Cher has admitted she thinks is "absolute crap" but i must admit i love this song and think Chers powerful voice has made this power ballad really stand out and her passion she puts into it is spectacular.
"Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" is a brilliant US #1 with some cheery gypsie tamborines and chers distinctive voice singing about her life in a travelling show. A brilliant song that rightfully stands out in chers fabulous career.
Another rock song that Cher made a big hit was the fantastic "I Found Someone" which also reveals Cher's passion and powerful vocals. Excellent.
Of course form the very early years of Cher's career you of course have the international #1 Sonni & Cher hit "I Got You Babe", silly but cheerful and even from this young age Cher still had some voice. Another good Sonni and Cher cklassic here is "The Beat Goes On" with its simple but driving beats.
Lets not go on anymore about the endless cher classic which have become a part of music history, form the early Cher hits "Bang, Bang(My Baby Shot Me Down)" or "All i Really Want To Do" or the eery but fabulous US #1 "Dark Lady". Thgis album is in one word EXCELLENT! A must have classic album.
not just a pretty face
none of this music makes sence
I mean folk-pop, hair-metal, euro-dance & (non)singer-songwriter songs don't usually go togeather that well
but here they all seem to make sence.
WARNING
don't buy the british single disc version track down the 2 disc international version it's well worth it
EXCELLENT!
Well, what can I say... Cher started as a nineteen-year-old girl in the summer of 1965, and she's came all the way to 2004 - incredible! Not only that, Cher looks as young as 20.
This album is fantastic - my Top 10 favourites are: "Believe", "Strong Enough", "The music's no good without you", "All I really want to do", "I Found Someone", "All or Nothing", "Dov'e Lamore", "Dark Lady", "Song for the lonely", and "Gyspies Tramps and Thieves". A mixture of urban sound right through to beautiful pop music. I think the down sides are "If I could turn back time", for one. This song is a bit too depressing. Another one, "Half Breed". OK, this song's very exciting, I admit, but the chorus gets a bit too much. However, your decision, you rate it! It is a MUST HAVE album!
