Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Joss Stone is blessed with a strong voice and a will to sing old-school soul and The Soul Sessions is worthy of more than novelty status. Not every 16-year-old Caucasian, English girl can hang with the likes of Betty Wright ("Clean Up Woman") and Angie Stone (no relation).

Wisely avoiding iconic songs by the genre's biggest names, Stone and a production team that includes Wright opt for lesser-known tunes by the likes of Laura Lee, Joe Simon and the Soul Brothers Six--not to mention their digging out (with guest coproducer ?uestlove from the Roots) the great soul lyric in the White Stripes' "Fell in Love with a (Boy)". Joss Stone occasionally misses a connection; her "Some Kind of Wonderful" is listless and when she develops a bit more subtlety, it'll be welcome. But The Soul Sessions has a spark beyond the album's obvious good taste. --Rickey Wright

Souless Sessions......unless you're twelve!1
I arrive at the Souls Sessions like the Fuzz at a Brixton Blues - and by the time you have read this just as welcome.

Twenty plus years ago, Prince tied a bandana around his temples and waved a strat around like it was an AK47. It would be several years before defenders of the Hendrix faith would allow Prince's name to be spoken in recognition of something original.
So how on earth did Mojo et al roll over so easily with Soul Sessions?
To the uninitiated SS is breakthrough, heavy "smoky" vibes breathed over R'n'B creations old and new. Look at the competition of the day Natasha Beddingfield, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Dido, or back to Kylie and the Sugarbabes!
But hang on a minute this is Sixteen year old Kentish girl (or possibly girl of Kent) aping Mavis Staples, Jean Knight, Gladys Knight and Irma Franklin (yes... Aretha's sister) and we get eulogies like the world has been remade. I beg to differ.
First when the originals stood in a rudimentary booth, with Stax writtAYNE on the front, the sung with pure emotion. The result begat style, they weren't folloWANG one. On SS the fresh fresh face Neo-Soul-a-like, dons black cans in favour of dangly earRAAYNGS, and poses obscured by artfully suspended condenser mic. And what you see is exactly what you're gonna get. They read the book ticked all the boxes and then paid veteran session mercenaries (and every man has his price I can assure you) for added authenticity. And what you have is....Lady (from Kent) sAAYANGS the blues !
Am I offended...yeah just a bit, the opeNAAYANG is passable, but Dirty Man noTHANG short of horrific and an affront to the genre. Endlessly droNAAYANG and warbBERLAAYNG the heavily laboured lyric. Worse to come at the end when she attempts the underrated but unsurpriSAANG much-covered For the Love of You. Originally by a certain Whitney Houston - whoever she is, gives a demonstration of knowing what you can do, and haVANG the confidence NOT to over do it. Whitney elegantly refined and understated, Stone just slaps it on all over the place. Rip it up? Joss murders this one.
If you are under 20 buy it and believe it. If you are over 40 - Atlantic? Stax? Philly? Tamla? Soul Power? Soul to Soul? (JB not Jazzie B) wake up and get real.
Music by numbers, surfing on the wave of ignorance. Soul for Six-Teen's.
By the way Joss where on earth does the accent come from?

Exciting album from fresh British soul group.5
I must admit i had not heard of The Joss Stone before my ex girlfriend slipped this, their debut album, into my Car CD player. However, as the first track opened i was instantly taken aback by lead singer Alison's soulful, haunting vocals, and instantly pulled over the car and silently wept. After listening through the album at the roadside (apart from track 3 which i instantly skipped upon learning it was a cover version, a practice i consider lazy, especially for a debut album) i turned the car around and we returned home where i immediately ordered 2 copies for myself from Amazon. Apart from the afore-mentioned Track 3, there is not a bad track on the album, which showcases confident song-writing ability, and the extraordinary, precocious talent of a young lead singer i believe was only 14 at the time of recording, backed up by a solid group of musicians. I am yet to hear any of this bands newer material, as i am scared of shattering my love for this album in case it is not as enthralling. 5 stars.

she is absolutely incredible and this album rocks just like her other 2 5
