Encore Tony4
An intriguing idea which is almost wholly successful.

A lot of contemporary songs have their roots in opera as much as, say, the blues and this collection fully explores this little researched connection.

Henry's magnificent voice is exploited wonderfully in the most expressive of these songs, namely 'Delilah', 'All By Myself' and a triumphal 'I Want to Know What Love Is' and the disc would easily have gained the full five stars if the selection was consistent - like a previous reviewer has remarked 'Yesterday' does not lend itself to the aria treatment, as for Status Quo's 'Whatever You Want' - 'nuff said!

Nevertheless a lot of these numbers transcend the relative blandness of their pop predecessors. A minor quibble is the inclusion of a back beat on a couple which, considering the sheer quality of the singing, seems too much of a compromise to the burgeoning 'cross-over' market.

However an incidental benefit is a unique but potentially profound way of acquiring proficiency in another language. Yep I know this isn't the point, but this reviewer has certainly picked up a bit of Italian trying to warble along in the shower having been saturated with the English lyrics earlier!

Definitely worth a listen - the voice is the thing. A compilation that begs a follow up. The possibilities are mouth-watering.

Well done4
Tony Henry brings a concept to classical music which i dont personally think has been done before : he brings a new, fresh , youthful image to a widely unappreciated form of music ( this coming from a heavy metal fan ). I saw the televised advert for the release of this album and something caught my attention; possibly the power and the emotion behind his voice or the fact that he sounds like he really enjoys singing classical music.

When i first asked for this album i didnt know it was modern day hits into an operatic style and with the exception of " 'O Sole Mio" which remains slightly out of contrast to the rest of the album the rest of it holds together perfectly well. so to anyone who wants something that little bit different or to those who maybe are not quite into the classical music scene i think you would be pleasnatly surprised by this. Tony adds the extra bonus of the comical " whatever you want" by status quo.

Criticised Tony Henry may be but music is about your own creativity and style. Therfore, I suggest you hear a taster of Tony before you buy because there is no point buying it and then realising its not quite what you want you are looking for!

Tony Henry Modern Arias5
This is an excellent album that will appeal to both opera fans and anybody who likes a good song!
Tony Henry's voice will make the hairs on your neck stand on end.
The arrangment of the songs is innovative, different and daring!
Status Quo as opera really works!
The Royal Philharmonic are superb.
The only critisism came from my 13 year old son who is a REM fan.
He enjoyed the operatic version of the track (and he hates opera)
However did not like the fact it was sung in Italian.
This is a perfect stocking filler!
