Customer Reviews

Without a doubt, the best compilation of Phyllis to date4
Having been a Phyllis Hyman fan for many years, her passing has certainly left a void in the music industry today. Her style, her finesse can't be duplicated. She brought to the industry a gift that many new artists today lack--a presence.

This CD was too long in coming, but well worth the wait. Although it saddens me that Phyllis is not here to enjoy the fine work put into it. It's obvious that it was a labor of love for Michael Grimaldi. The track selection was excellent and the artwork was superb. Its also a shame that it didn't win the Grammy Award for best production for a compilation.

Many of the unreleased tracks were definitely a welcomed gift to any Phyllis fan who waited patiently for the release to CD, the McCoy Tyner collaboration and other gems. It far surpasses any previous compilation release or the ones that have come after, namely those redundant Platinum Series, and The Essense of Phyllis Hyman.

This compilation is the one to have in your collection if you're a serious collector.

For the REAL Fan4
Phyllis Hyman is my No1 female vocalist - I'm mesmorised when she sings. This collection represents a mix of unreleased tracks and some alternaive versions. On the whole, the collection is a welcome addition to her catalogue - but there are no "missed" tracks that could be described as stunning. Still, the quality is very good. Buy with confidence if you like her previous stuff.

A DIVA IN DEMAND5
Simply the best compilation to arrive on the scene to date, since Phyllis Hyman's passing. Unlike other "Greatest Hits" packages consisting of the usual hum-drum, over re-issued album versions of songs, this stellar compilation consists (in part) of actual demo session material from the 1980's which was decidedly shelved for various reasons. Specific tracks were taken from their original sources, such as acetate pressings and studio reel-to-reels, while also debuting other songs which have never appeared on CD before prior to this release. This collaboration also contains the hightly anticipated and previously unreleased 1982 McCoy Tyner tracks, which remain some of Phyllis' most critically acclaimed works. The extensive CD booklet contains an informative introduction (with the full-length notes appearing on Expansion Records' website , along with numerous candid photographs of Phyllis and a description of each song summized individually. Each summation contains rare and insightful information, along with some of Phyllis Hyman's personal, but candid commentary. Introduction, song summary notes and photographs are courtesy of Michael Grimaldi. Produced by Ralph Tee and Michael Grimaldi for Expanion Records of England, in association with The Other Artists' Entertainment 2003.
