Evolution
Incubus have always been a band at their best when they are breaking their own musical mould, trying to introduce all of their varied musical influences into a piece. To some people this makes them inaccessable but to me it represents the best thing about the band. You can never get bored of Incubus because they always come up with something different be it drum and bass, jazz, blues or metal there is something for everyone.
This album comes at the end of an extremely difficult period for the band. Fighting high risk legal action against your own record label and having to fire a founding member of your band would finish most groups but not these guys and I can honestly say they are better than ever because of it. The events of the past year seem to have whetted their musical appetite and given them a greater purpose.
The thumping single "Megalomaniac" starts this collection off and shows exactly why Incubus are so appealling. Quiet verse building into a shouty crescendo of a chorus showing Brandon Boyd at his vocal best. In fact Boyd's vocals are perhaps the most improved area of the band. His range has increased dramatically and can shout with passion, sing a ballad with a moody subtlety most vocalists will never match or indulge in falsetto gymnastics that even the Darkness would be proud of.
Pounding rock songs like the title track "Crow Left of..." and "Pistola" sit easily alongside the ballads like "Talk Shows in Mute" and the haunting "Here in my Room" and show the versatility of Mike Einzinger (Guitar) and new bassist Ben Kenney, both of whom love to cross influences such as introducing jazz lick into a metal song. It really doesnt matter what your musical tastes are, theres something here for everyone.
The best part of this album though is that Incubus have finally encapsualted in an album something they had previously failed to include; the energy of a live show. These guys have always been better live and if thats still the case these songs are gonna kick arse live. Its in old cliche but if your only gonna buy one album this year, get this one. Superb
give it a few listens!
I approached A Crow Left of the Murder with caution as Morning View is without doubt one of my favourite albums ever. On the first listen of Crow the tracks that really stood out were Megalomaniac (with a fantastic video by the way!), Agoraphobia and Made for TV Movie. But this album is such a grower..a few hours later and each song seems to improve. Made for TV Movie is really catchy, with great chilled out vibes and drawly laid back lyrics. Talk Shows on Mute is a great ballad worthy of comparison to Drive (Make Yourself) or Wish you Were Here (Morning View).Beware! Criminal and Sick Sad Little World are a return to the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. days with a slightly more raw, harder edge than the mellow Morning View. The low point is for me Smile Lines which has an album-filler feel to it and Here in my Room is the cheesiest Incubus song I've ever heard, but the sheer manic brilliance of Zee Deveel make up for it. Crow is a definite must-have for any Incubus fan, but if you are a Morning View devotee, brace yourself for something new. It shows another step in the evolution of a really unique band..once again Brandon Boyd's lyrics are really something special, covering the usual topics of love and politics in a really thought-provoking, slightly edgier way then seen before. The new bassist Ben Kenny really makes his presence felt and the rhythm and beat work so well you would think he had always been on the scene. Overall..after you give it a chance, this is an excellent album and one that new fans will really enjoy if they are looking for something a bit different.. and old fans will appreciate the new change in direction.
buy it..NOW!
It's so difficult to compare this album to any other incubus album, because they are all so different. 'A Crow Left of the Murder' has the guitar rifts of 'Make Yourself',the vocals of 'Morning View' and is also diverse enough to appeal to the 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E' fans. As usual Incubus have managed to produce a pure genius collection of anthems to keep the listener occupied throughout. I have had this playing non-stop since the day i bought it, no matter what mood i'm in. The mixture of fast up tempo songs (such as 'Pistola','Priceless') and slow, harmonic songs ( such as 'Southern Girl', 'Here in my Room') make this the best cd i have bought so far this year, a must for all Incubus fans. For those thinking of buying Incubus for the first time, i have never met anyone who didn't like this band, no matter what type of music they are in to, so give it a try!
