best game on the mac5
Put quite simply, UT04 is the best online shooter on the Mac. Graphically it's better than anything else...including Halo, and it terms of gameplay, streets ahead of any other FPS. If you're readig this then you've probably already downloaded the demo from the website, and know how great Onslaught is. But Onslaught is only part of what makes this such a great game. The other modes (I'm particularly fond of CTF) are all excellent, with a huge variety of maps (compared to what, 10 on Halo) and an incredible amonunt of weaponry. Be warned however, it's this sophistication that makes this game so unforgiving to noobs. Learning the layout of the maps, where the pick-ups are, and how to use the weapons, their secondary fires, and avoiding being killed every 5 seconds takes a lot of time...I found this game (still finding to be honest) much harder to reach a competent level at than MOH or Halo...but it's worth it. Just looking at the beauty of the level design (check out Magma or Avaris), and the character design, and the weapon design...and feel the playability of the different game types.
The first time you make it back with the enemy flag, or destroy the other teams power core with an AVRIL will really make you smile.
Oh, and I'm running this on a G4 Powerbook 15" with 1.5ghz...and it runs beautifully
Go on, buy it...it's almost certainly the only game you'll need for at least 6 months

Part 25
Alright, so this is my 2nd review of this game...but in my other review I said that UT2004 would be the only game you would need for the next 6 months...and 6 months down the line from my first review and about 8 months after getting the game...I'm stilll playing it more than ever. Despite getting other games since buying it (BF:1942 and CoD), this is the game that I keep coming back to.
Basically this is because of the brilliance of online games.

The game came originally with over 90 maps, and Epic have a policy of encouraging the community to make their own stuff, thus there have been numerous releases of retail quality maps available to download for free. Additionally, Epic released and ECE download, which has 4 new Onslaught maps, as well as 3 completely new vehicles. UT2k4 feels as if it is constantly evolving, I have over 250 maps for this game now...and all of this new content is free! Compared with many publishers who release "extension packs" that cost around 30 pounds and only feature 10 or so new maps and a couple more weapons, then you have to credit Epic's philsophy.

On top of this, there is the huge number of modifications for the game: These include new gametypes for UT2004, like Vehicle CTF, CTF4 (with 4 teams) and Jailbreak, as well as total modifications which you can download, and when you start them, they use the UTengine to create a totally different game. For example RedOrchestra is a WW2 game with better graphics than MoH, and it's superbly playable online. Then there's Troopers, a Star Wars game, which to me, feels better than Star Wars:Battlefront. You get to pilot speeder bikes through Endor, X-Wings and Tie-Fighters above the Death Star etc. And there is still UTXMP to come in December....a modification which when it was first released for Unreal 2 had many people claiming it was better than the original game itself.

But these things are just the icing on top of a great great game. UT2004 is brilliant at the online staples like Deathmatch and CTF, but Onslaught really pushes the fps genre forward. As I said, 8 months later and I still try to get a game every day if I can.

Also, someone said in another review that PC users taunt Mac users online. This is one of the most bizarre things I have ever heard. I've played 100s of hours online with this game and NEVER encountered anything like that. For a start, no-one knows what kind of computer your using, and secondly, UT2004 seems to have a more mature player base than the likes of Halo and BF, and with the exception of the demo servers (and why would you play on them anyway when you've got the full game?), most servers are pretty pleasant and free of people behaving like idiots.

Buy this game now...you won't need anything else until UT3 comes out in 2006.

Great gaming5
First of all, i've got to be totally honest, i've never played this game on the mac system however, having played it for hours on end on a pc you can tell this game is a great. If you're a fan of older versions or more specifically the G.O.T.Y addition you will love it and should already own. This is the best multiplayer pc game out at the moment (and to be honest probably the best one ever) although broadband is a requirement if you do want to indulge in online play. Though it's a good singleplayer you are not seeing it at it's full potential until you have played a low lag game of onslaught with 31 other human players. Worth a try and amazon do it for the cheapest prices around (beats Tesco and woolworths is a rip off-no offence to them). As well as great gameplay and graphics some functions within the game although simple make it truly great, for example the text-speech option which reads out what people are typing this saves time and effort that would usually be wasted on reading also the fact that it is micraphone enabled allowing for voice without a tedious set-up procedure (auto-configuration). As i mentioned i have not played this game on a mac but let's face it, they're better than pc's with better graphics cards and image processing etc. therefore it whould be better than on a pc. Any way you look at it, go out and buy it. What are you waiting for. DO IT NOW!
