Amazon.co.uk Review
With their White Stripes connection now shattered, the Von Bondies have been seeking their own space, away from Detroit's hipster scene. Their sense of liberation is evident in Pawn Shoppe Heart, one of the brashest, most flamboyant releases in ages, far surpassing the band's intense, misanthropic debut Lack of Communication. The main reason for this is Stollsteimer himself. Now an assured showman and writer, he possesses an archness and brazen faithlessness that recalls glam rock greats David Johansen and Mike Monroe and his delivery of songs ranging from garage grind through bubblegum rock to shrieking blues is marked by a stylish feel for wit and rhythm.
Happily held in check by producer and ex-Talking Head Jerry Harrison, the band back their singer with a tight and spiky performance, guitarist Marcie Bolen and bassist Carrie Smith adding vocal sass and sexual balance to such gems as "C'mon C'mon", "Tell Me What You See" and the excellent "Not That Social". They also shine during the thudding, rough-house blues of "Mairead", "Right of Way" and their raging cover of "Try a Little Tenderness", which arrives after what is apparently the closing title track. Pawn Shoppe Heart is an impressively dirty major-label debut. --Dominic Wills
CD Description
Second album from Detroit garage rockers infamous for the bust-up between their frontman Jason Stollsteimer and the band's former mentor and producer Jack White. Released on Warner Bros. and produced by Jerry Harrison (No Doubt, Live, FineYoung Cannibals), 'Pawn Shoppe Heart' continues to refine their fusion of raw, emotional blues with filthy, frenetic, 60s-style garage punk. Includes the single 'C'mon C'mon'.

Not the White Stripes
If you're looking for a new White Stripes album this isn't it and that's no bad thing.
This is very different and very good. The album does take a few listens to get into, but once you've put the effort in you are rewarded. Tracks like C'mon C'mon and Been Swank are standout but the rest really grow on you. I've had trouble getting this out of my CD player since I bought it and would recommend to anyone who wants to get into different Detroit groove.
I can't wait to see them live in April.
C'mon C'mon
"Pawn Shoppe Heart" is the follow up to The Von Bondies' debut album "Lack of Communication" and doesn't stray too far from it's precursor; that said it is hard to find serious fault with any song on here. "C'mon C'mon", the first single release from the album, was clearly chosen for its anthemnic qualities and is perhaps the signature track of the album - boosted by Stollsteimer's vocals, slightly reminiscent of Jim Morrison and even more so a more soulful and forceful Jack White. However, "C'mon C'mon" is backed up by a series of catchy tunes - not least "Not That Social", where Carrie Smith (the bassist) takes the vocals to give the Von Bondies almost a Blondie feel! Indeed, "Pawn Shoppe Heart" does seem to lend itself fairly heavily to its predecessors, much like a lot of stuff coming out of Detroit, but this is not such a bad thing when executed with such style and panache. Indeed, "Been Swank" and "Tell Me What You See" would almost be at home on the next Strokes album, and in "Pawn Shoppe Heart" the Von Bondies really do seem to have captured what's good from the past and blended it with the Detriot cool of tomorrow - definitely an early contender for album of the year.
a von bondies convert!!!!
ABSOLUTELY amazing album!!!! If you only buy 1 album this year, make it this one. Jason Stollsteiner on vocals is awesome, a cross between jim morrison and mark bolan with a bit of gravel thrown in for good measure.
There is not 1 weak song on this album which is testament to the superbly drafted lyrics and catchy guitar riffs which will have you reaching for your airguitar straight away (not in a cheesy status quo kinda way, think more led zeppelin). I urge anyone not to nod there head or tap there foot while this albums playing because it's IMPOSSIBLE!!
In short buy this album now i promise you, you will not be disappointed.
