Debut Album from ESL Music's prodigy
Forgive the cliche, but there really aren't enough superlatives for this album, so I won't bore you with failed attempts. Just buy it.
To anyone who gets off on the more organic, dub-inflected sounds of ESL Music's catalogue, this is one you simply must own.
Imagine Thievery Corporation catching up with label-mate and former collaborator Desmond Williams, somewhere in Argentina late one Sunday afternoon. After a few Bombay Sapphires in a quiet smoky back room, they find themselves jamming along with a gifted young Spanish-classical guitarist and his entourage of sultry-sounding female vocalists, the dub-meter turned way up high. Luckily for you, a recording of the session finds its way into their luggage, and back at the ESL ranch it gets tweaked, squeezed through the echo chamber, honed and refined, and stuck on wax. The results not only stand up alongside Thievery Corp's own albums, but - almost impossible to imagine, this - they actually surpass them.
Trust me, once you've heard this, however long it takes for the next Aubele album to surface, it'll be too long.

Gotan Project clone
I first heard this album whilst I was travelling in New Zealand, back in March 2004. At first I thought it was a new Gotan Project (GP) CD but then I realised it belonged to an unknown Argentinian musician called Federico Aubele. Like Gotan Project, Aubele's true inspirations are 1) Piazzolla, 2) Argentina's true contribution to world music - the tango and 3) Manu Chao. Being a huge fan of both GP and Manu Chao, I eventually got around to buying Federico's first album. Although it hardly breaks any new ground, I must say this is a pleasant album. For the few out there not familiar with any of the artists mentioned in this review, I would strongly recommend you buy Gotan Project's La revancha del tango and Manu Chao's Clandestino first.
