I stayed up to watch this, and it didn't disapoint
Backlash comes from Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The crowd obvioulsy go crazy for Benoit (it IS his hometown and all).
1: Ric Flair VS. Shelton Benjamin
Edmonton, Alberta seems to have a lot of Nature Boy fans. A good opening match. No Tag Team title defense tonight though. 7.5/10
2: Tajiri VS. The Coach
The Coach actually pulls off a few wrestling moves in this match. I didn't think this match would be as good as this. 7/10
3: Handicap Match
Chris Jericho VS. Christian and Trish Stratus
The rivalry continues in this Handicap Match. This was basically a Wrestlemania rematch, but Trish does get in the ring a few times. 8/10
4: WWE Women's Championship
Victoria (Champion) VS. Lita
Quite a good women's match. The crowd didn't know who to cheer for as both of these women were crowd favourites. 7.5/10
5: No Holds Barred Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
Randy Orton (Champion) VS. Cactus Jack
What a match this was. They used everything (and I mean everything) on each other. Chairs, trash cans, thumbtacks and a lovely bed of barbed wire. Cactus jack is announced as 'Mick Foley', I thought it was supposed to be Cactus Jack. He also comes out to normal Foley music. Anyway, this match is great. 10/10
6: La Resistance VS. The Hurricane and Rosey
This was a gap-filler between the insane carnage of the last match and the Egde/Kane match. 5/10
7: Edge VS. Kane
Edge's first match after about 14 months of being injured. Could have been better, but still an okay match. 7/10
8: Triple Threat Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
Chris Benoit (Champion) VS. Shawn Michaels VS. Triple H
This match was longer than the Wrestlemania match (just over half an hour). The crowd doesn't like it too much when Michaels has Benoit in the Sharpshooter and EARL HEBNER comes out to referee. What is it? About six and a half years ago? Meh. A great match, equally as good as Wrestlemania.
Overall, a great PPV.
A Strong Card for Edmonton
Chris Benoit walked out of Madison Square Garden the World Heavyweight Champion, and at Backlash, he walked into his home town of Edmonton, Alberta Canada to defend the title against the same opponents from Wrestlemania 20: Shawn Michales and Triple H.
The first RAW PPV since the dissapointing Armageddon, this is also the first RAW PPV following the draft lottery which filled RAW with incredible talent, and sadly drained SMACKDOWN of all of thier last remaining true stars.
What is SMACKDOWN'S loss is RAW's gain, as Backlash provides an incredible card from beggining to end, the comedy match that is Johnathan Coachman vs Tajiri is given the right amount of time (meaning, not a lot) and the matches between Ric Flair and Shelton Benjamen, and Chris Jericho against Christian and Trish Stratus make for a good build up.
But again, the three people who steal the show are Benoit, Michales, and Triple H, who, in front of a crowd very familiar with Michales (Montreal, 1997, say no more) pull off a worthy main event with a few shocking twists which make any Bret Hart fan respond in anger, and excellent wrestling which will satisfy fans of All three men
Backlash is a gem of a PPV, proof that RAW can deliver quality when given the right people to work with
