out at last -- BUT
Beware, this "remastered" album has been copied off vinyl. Well that'sokay if it was the only source that could be located, and the sonics arenot (too) bad. But Lemon Records quality control leaves a sour taste. Atthe end of track 4, after the fade out someone bumps the turntable andafter a very audible needle skip we get another 40 seconds of the samefadeout. Somebody wasn't paying attention during editing. This album wasthe first and strongest of two releases by Automatic Man in the mid1970's. Automatic Man featured Michael Shrieve (ex Santana drummer) alongside Pat Thrall (great guitar), Bayete' (keyboards/vocals) and Doni Harvey(bass). The band had a slightly different line-up on the second album"Visitors". The music can best be described as a kind of spacey funk rockwhich although of it's time still stands up today. The title trackfeatures a riff that Thrall would later re-use on the Hughes/Thrall albumin 1982 but the overall feel of this band's music is trippy and soulful. This album will probably sell more now than in 1976 and hopefully one dayget another release with a bit more love and care. Buy it.
A welcome re-issue of a Blackrockjazzfunk MONSTER !
For anyone who owns a vinyl copy of this album I guess I'll be preachingto the converted, but for anyone who might be intrigued or maybe heardabout it in hushed tones, I'll continue.
Released in '76 it was the brainchild of keyboard player and singerBayete, who teamed up with Mike Shrieve, recently departed from Santana,to produce an album full of songs that proved to be a unique mixture ofinfluences, making it perhaps near impossible to categorise but at thesame time providing a fusion of soul and funk and jazz-rock in the truestsense.
Firstly the tunes are so infectious, Bayete's vocal and lyrics soaringlike a bird over some absolutely dazzling playing from all concerned. Next, hats off to Doni Harvey on bass for knowing what to leave out aswell as what to lay down ( if you catch my drift )and Mike Shrieve, whoseems to be given the opportunity here to play in a slightly moreaggresive style than he could with Santana, and as for Pat Thrall's guitarplaying ... it'll have you pinned to the wall.
Mention must also be made of the absolutely unique SOUND this album has -the drum sound is fantastically crisp and Thrall's guitar is suitably inyour face when the occasion arises. Basically it's one of those albumsthat sounds fantastic played LOUD !
The musical climate took a bit of a sea change, for better or worse notlong after this came out, so I guess that this, and it's refusal to bepigeonholed anywhere meant that it maybe got a little lost.
You have hundreds of albums you love, but a couple of dozen from any timeperiod you REALLY love - this is one of mine.
I think I've made a suitable recommendation here - go try it !
a wonderful blast from the past
The first Automatic Man album, i originally bought this in a small independant record shop in the late seventies because i thought the album cover looked Sci-fi and COOL :-) You know how sometimes we all take a gamble? :-) Im so glad i took that gamble. I stuck it on my turntable when i got home that day and couldn't believe my luck! My vinyl copy has taken such a battering over the years and i have hunted constantly for a CD version, thank god it's arrived. Although it's not the greatest of reproductions it's good enough believe me. Such a blend of styles, futuristic funk, futuristic rock, energy and melody, way ahead of it's time, and doesn't sound dated in the least in my view. The keyboard skills and vocals of Bayette and Pat Thrall's guitar working perfectly together. My favourite track, if i had to choose one, would be "Interstellar tracking devices". GET IT NOW! Automatic Man only produced two albums to my knowledge and i luckily have both. Fingers crossed the second Album will be released on CD too in time. Whatever happened to Bayette?
