Amazon.co.uk Review
South Yorkshire folk singer-songwriter Kate Rusby celebrates a decade-plus as a recording artist and performer with this live concert, mostly adapted from her popular studio albums and replete with her typically evocative, emotional immediacy singing ancient ballads, sea shanties, and lullabies. Highlights include the infectious waltz, "Polly," the sprightly, hopeful "I Courted a Sailor," and Rusby's crystalline vocal on "The White Cockade." Backed by her outstanding, all-acoustic band, Rusby's celebrated talent for making an old sound feel new again drives the delicate plaint "Who Will Sing Me Lullabies," the pop-like "The Cobbler's Daughter," and the sad "Withered and Died," which sounds very much like the passage of heartbreaking events into memory. Newcomers to Rusby may wonder if those songs in her repertoire having to do with dragons, knights, and fair maidens (such as this set's "Sir Eglamore") are terribly precious, but they actually prove as personally expressive as anything else she does. --Tom Keogh

One of the world's most exciting talents - great performance
I've been listening to Kate Rusby's albums for a couple of years now and this DVD is a great complement to them. The musicianship is second to none and the rapport and humour within the band is apparent for all to see. One of the most endearing things about Kate is her utter lack of pretension which comes through loud and clear in the interview section (which is marred only by Andy Kershaw's wearing probably the worst pair of shorts in the world), yet her interpretations have been one of the main driving forces behind 'folk' moving back towards the mainstream - and the exciting thing is that she's still got decades to go.
All in all I would thoroughly recommend this. The only caveat is that the recent tour, from which it's taken, tended to focus on the last couple of albums and one or two barnstormers like 'Drowned Lovers' are conspicuous by their absence. Only a small gripe though - it's professionally filmed and produced, contains loads of good tracks (i.e. great value) and some genuinely interesting interviews etc. Buy it!
LIVE CONCERT AS IT SHOULD BE
Having first seen a documentary about Kate Rusby I decide to buy several of her CD's and wasnt disappointed,I then saw this DVD of her live concert in Leeds, wellI did have second thoughts as I have bought "Live" ones before and nearly always the sound was terrible and did no favours to the artists but this one is superb,Kates unrestrained voice still comes out like that of an angel[albeit one with a broad Yorkshire accent] and the band are tight with no bad chords or squeeks and whines, you could almost be at home listening to it on cd,and thats as it should be,so go out and buy this DVD with confidence,it also contains interviews with all the band members, and an extra session of three songs. All in all well worth the money and watchable again and again
the star underneath the stars
Well, a very lovely concert it was, wasn't young Kate's, eh? I wish I could write with a Yorkshire accent.
A beautiful thing. The musicians are amazing. John McCusker must be some sort of genius. They all played so tightly with each other and Kate, I was reminded of the Chieftains. Let's wish these younger folks will have such an honored history to come.
Kate herself is sweet and a charmer. Quite an irresistable smile. She seemed a wee bit shy at times. Might be my imagination. Like Alison Krauss showed in her LIVE concert dvd, Kate has a nice sense of humor and likes to tease. I thought she sang beautifully throughout--particularly so in CANAAN'S LAND, WITHERED AND DIED and UNDERNEATH THE STARS. How could anyone in that lovely Leeds theatre be dry-eyed during that last song with the lights swirling star-like around? Kate also reminds me in an odd way of Kasey Chambers--her youth, her maturity, her love of traditional music and yet her independence in her musical vision. Quite two wonderful women.
Technically, the dvd was great. The concert was filmed simply and beautifully--must be digital video. I thought for a minute someone had snuck in a high-definition television when I saw the quality of the picture. Great coverage of the amazing musicians and good roving of the heterogeneous audience (old and very young--a great mix).
An essential for all fans of the great Kate and for anyone who loves traditional music and great women vocalists. And not to mention a wealth of fascinating bonus material on the dvd.
