Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Jerry Garcia had an insatiable appetite for music in the 70s, a decade when the Grateful Dead released seven studio albums and three live collections. Simultaneously, he embarked on a solo career that, like the Dead's 70s records, alternately attempted to harness and indulge Garcia's free-flowing inspiration. All Good Things collects the five studio albums he recorded between 1972 and 1982 in one thoroughly annotated, generously enhanced box set. Garcia as a solo artist was most inspired when indulging his eclectic whims--the entirety of his almost-alone debut, 1972's Garcia, a then-revelatory acoustic-swing version of Irvin Berlin's "Russian Lullaby" and any number of easy-flowing jams--and least interesting when in the sway of contemporaneous rock and R&B. Garcia wasn't so much a guy who honed albums as he was a musician who loved to play, whether the tapes were rolling or not. The producers of All Good Things take full advantage of his prolificacy, fleshing out each of the individual titles with bonus material and capping the box with a richly rewarding 12-song CD of outtakes and alternate versions. --Steven Stolder, Amazon.com
CD Description
Though the Grateful Dead were notorious for sounding betteronstage than in the studio, Dead leader Jerry Garcia's solowork fared better on record, perhaps due to its less open-ended nature. The six-disc ALL GOOD THINGS set brings all of Garcia's studio recordings under one roof--along with a handsomely appointed booklet and a disc of outtakes--and convincingly makes the case for Garcia as the most aesthetically successful Dead solo artist.
The first album, GARCIA, essentially a one-man-band record, contains some of Garcia and Robert Hunter's best songs, which would become Dead standards ("Sugaree", "Loser", etc.). The follow-up, COMPLIMENTS, is full of covers and expectedly tasty guitar work. Recorded in 1976, REFLECTIONS is a Dead album in all but name, though considerably more concise than the band's contemporaneous offerings. CATS UNDER THE STARS and RUN FOR THE ROSES are the most polished, but also contributed to the Dead's repertoire ("Gomorrah", "Valerie"). As this collection proves, Garcia's amiable singing and astonishing guitar playing, even over the course of six CDs, never becomes too much of a good thing.
Customer Reviews
A Feast Of Jerry - and how sweet it is!!
At last, a proper revival of Jerry Garcia's solo studio albums in one handy package, with a treasure trove of rarities on each disc, plus an extra bonus CD of more outtakes. I've always felt Jerry's off-stage work has been somewhat overlooked and under-rated. The Grateful Dead phenomenon was always best experienced live, no doubt, but they could (individually and as a band) be very inventive in a sterile environment like the studio. Jerry once described recording an album as like building a ship in a bottle and, upon hearing the evidence in "All Good Things", he and his alternate band crafted some beautiful ones. True, he did record more covers than originals but it was always the song that was more important to Jerry, not who wrote it. He was beyond the narrow confines of critical acclaim and the notion that an artist's integrity rested on writing original material all the time. Transforming "I Saw Her Standing There" or "Tangled Up In Blue" into something different and enjoyable, even original, takes a special talent. With Jerry, the end results are amazing - so funky! And it's staggering how a number of them are out-takes - "Tangled Up In Blue" is one, "Dear Prudence" is another. But there are many more!
The sound quality is exceptional - full bodied and warm. And the package itself is wonderful. Each individual album comes in its own digipack, plus there's an exhaustive booklet with tons of info and recollections. Truly valuable.
Unreservedly recommended
If you're considering buying this collection you're almost certainly a Grateful Dead fan who already knows and admires Garcia's playing, singing, and writing. If this is true then buy this package. Its full of great songs that would have graced any Dead album, even American Beauty. Like all good solo albums the artist has taken the opportunity to do different stuff that wouldn't suit their normal band, so a lot of the stuff here will surprise you. The whole collection shows much more control and has less showing off than you might expect from a member of the Grateful Dead. One final point - this stuff is not very well known, in fact I only really knew one of the albums well before buying this. Getting to know it has been really good fun, the more I listen to it the more impressed I am with the variety of Garcia's singing and playing while all the time remaining immediately recognisable.
Beautiful Box Set!
Ok. I Haven't even got around to listening to the cd's yet but that doesn't really matter because I know I will enjoy the majority of the tracks, maybe even them all who knows! But the main reason I feel the need to share my thoughts in a revue (something I rarely, if ever bother to do) is simply because this is the most wonderful box set I have ever seen! It is almost a work of art in itself! It should have been numbered and released in a limited edition, and by now it would be worth a small fortune! Trust me if you are even slightly interested, and can get it for a reasonable price, then buy it you won't be dissappointed!
