Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Even ignoring all the spin-offs and special editions Mortal Kombat: Deception marks the sixth iteration of the popular beat ‘em-up franchise and bucking the trend of just about every other games franchise ever the games just keep getting better. Which is actually not quite as big a compliment as you might think considering the original games were, despite their notoriety at the time, really not that great.

2002's Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance was though, and this game follows on from its good work to present an engaging mix between Street Fighter, Soulcalibur and Tekken. It's not quite the sum of these parts but it's certainly learned something from each of them. The most obvious change from the previous game though is that this Mortal Kombat doesn't take itself quite as seriously as the last and as such is more in line with Mortal Kombat II, not just in the greater range of outrageous fatalities and deadly background elements but also in the reduced focus on 3D gameplay--such that most of your attacks occur primarily on along a single plane.

Taking advantage of this the game sees a return of the generic uppercut move and makes "juggling" a character (hitting them into the air and essentially playing keepy uppies with them) a lot easier. With a slew of new game modes, including the rather ingenious chess mode, there's a good mix here of something new, something old and something borrowed to keep the franchise alive for some time to come. -- David Jenkins

You've come a long way, baby...4
People who haven't played a MK game since the mega drive versions will be completely stunned by this game, I was!!

This is a great fighting game, graphics are good, moves are plentiful thanks to each fighter having three fighting styles, one of these lets you wield a weapon. The interactive levels are really fun and detailed to, not only do you have to worry about your opponant raining blows on you, but theres other nasty things to get impaled/crushed/drowned/burned with. One of my favourite levels is the classic pit level (many old skool MK fans will recognise) where you can uppercut someone onto a bed of spikes!! Which goes without saying that the MK uber-violence is till there, in the same ridiculous blood-drenched way that the fans know and love.

The amount of features that are in the main menu is also astonishing, lots and lots to do and see, and the mini game "Puzzle Kombat" is highly addictive and a nice break from the annoyance of being bashed by Noob-Smoke for the tenth time in a row!

So to recap, good fun with mates or alone, lots of cool stuff to do and funny tongue in cheek violence. Plus Amazon sells copies for £5.96. Whats there not to like?

Pure, gore filled fun!5
I bought this game simply for a nostalgia trip back to the hallowed days of 32-bits and 4 buttons. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was in fact, a great game.

MK fans will be happy to see the return of many of the old favourite characters (Baraka, Mileena, Nightwolf, Kabal......) plus a few new ones for good measure. Both the characters and the fighting arenas are modelled beautifully right down to the faces of the characters which progressively look more and more like raw hamburgers as they take a pasting.

The gameplay is frankly outstanding. The fighting itself is simple enough to button mash for the casual gamer and difficult enough to spend hours mastering 12 hit combos for the hard core fan. The game has a pleasing 'chunky' feel to it with hits feeling solid and satisfying (especially against your kid brother :) ). There is nothing quite like letting your rival beat you to within an inch of your life before prodding them off the edge of an enourmous cliff :)

As well as a superb fighting mode, there are also the mini games 'Puzzle Combat' in which you play a tetris style block game whilst itty bitty characters beat each other to a pulp and 'chess combat' which combines a strategic chess-like game with combat.

Most enjoyable though is the 'konquest mode' which allows you to roam the MK world performing daft quests for MK characters whilst laughing at the poorly written and acted script! Whilst in this mode your earn 'koins' which allow you to unlock an staggering number of videos, extra characters, extra costumes, biographies and concept art.

In short this is a very enjoyable game fun to play alone or with your mates. With over 600 extras to unlock it will last a fair while too!

MORTAL KOMBAT DECEPTION! (the ultimate beat'em-up game!)5
-
Mortal Kombat was the first ever computer game that i got,
and was the only game i could spend ages on for hours every
single day!

I am a huge fan of Mortal Kombat and have collected all of
them:(MK1, 2, 3, Ultimate MK3, advanced, Trilogy, 4, Gold, Mythologies, special forces & Deadly Alliance, and have pre-ordered Deception) since i got sega mega-drive when i was little.
And every time a new one came out it was more than 10x better,
but Deception is going to be 100x better than Deadly Alliance.

There are loads of classic characters that are back like:Baraka, Ermac, Jade, Kabal, Nightwolf, Noob-Saibot, Smoke, Raiden,
Scorpion, Sindel, Sub-Zero, Tanya and the secret character
Lui Kang, who is a zombie.

There are loads of new features like: Death Traps, Mini Game's
and Kari Kari(suicidal) moves and Onine Kombat.

In most level there are Death traps, which kill your opponant
in one shot eg.The Dark Prison(spiked walls that closes onto
the opponant!
Here are the names of the levels, which if your a Mortal Kombat
fan you will reconise some of them! [the ones with a * beside
them means there is a death trap(s)]:
Beetle Lair
Slaughter House*
Sky Temple*
YinYang Island*
Chamber Of Artifacts
Nethership Interior
Hell's Foundary*
Golden Desert*
Dark Prison*
Lower Mines***
Dragon Mountain
Lui Kang's Tomb
Courtyard
Portal
The Pit*
Quan Chi's Fortress*
The Dead Pool*
Kuatan Palace*
Living Forest
Dragon King's Temple*
Nexus*

The Konquest is even more better, because you start as a
16 year-old teenager, who is called 'Shujinko' and end as
a 60 year-old man. In Konquest you can meet literally
every single Mortal Kombat character including Motaro, the
boss of MK3!

Deception is abit like Dead or Alive, but with alot of blood
and can make your opponant EXPLODE! On most levels your start
in an area and you think "Hey, i'm not in the right arena", but
you are in the right arena, all your have to do is blast them
through a railing or wall, and to make it even better the
'uppercuts' are back, so you can punch them in the sky and make
them land on old wood flooring and make them fall to the next
area!

I recommend this game to all Beat'em-up and Mortal Kombat fans!
i give this game top 5 stars!
