Editorial Reviews

From the Label
Donavon is mates with Jack Johnson and a professional surfer…He is one of the most charismatic and soulful surfers in the world today yet his focus has shifted significantly to his music. This self-titled album is the acoustic compliment to the laid back world that Donovan comes from.

CD Description
Though Donavon Frankenreiter shares the same mellow surfer vibes as his labelmate/producer/surfing buddy Jack Johnson, the multi-syllabically named singer foregoes woozy jam-band tropes in favour of a sound reminiscent of dreamy, late-1960s soul in the Marvin Gaye/Stevie Wonder/Chi-Lites vein. Frankenreiter is possessed of a truly resonant, old-school R&B voice that is reinforced by the album's wonderfully warm, spare production. The result sounds more down-South than South Pacific. The spirited, retro-without-sounding-dated instrumental performances come courtesy of several members of Ben Harper's band, with guest appearances from Johnson and similarly groovy blues-rapper G. Love. A breezy, inviting mix of older sounds and new attitude, DONOVAN FRANKENREITER mixes Memphis, Chicago, and Detroit soul influences with a Californiabeach-bonfire vibe.

Customer Reviews

A must for Jack Johnson fans!5
This album got recomended to me by a fellow Jack Johnson fan. So I stuck it in my amazon shopping basket. A couple of days later I was driving to my dull and unrewarding office job. With the windows down and the system up listening to the first track on the album 'if it don't matter'. I felt like I was driving to the beach on the most beautifully sunny day in years. This album has the same laid back but uplifting feel as Jack's stuff. If anything, Donavon has stronger vocals. This album is a must for anyone who likes Jack Johnson's music.

summery guitars5
Like everyone below says, this is a must for anyone who likes Jack Johnson (I might even venture to say that I prefer this guy)....but a little more about the music itself; here we have happy, sunshine filled acoustic guitars with Donavon's strong vocals which match the sounds perfectly. There's also harmonicas, ukeleles and the usual percussion and bass.
The songs all stand out individually with beautiful hook-motifs and fantastic lyrics that make you want to listen over and over.

an album you don't get bored of5
