THE BEGINNING OF WRESTLEMANIA WHERE LEGENDS ARE MADE
WRESTLEMANIA:
This is good for historical reasons, but to be honest there's really not much here to get excited about, but I'll give it a 7 because it's the one that started it all!. The Main event is solid but that's really about it, not to say that the matches are boring it' just there Meh, and not really that exciting, I did like the enthusiastic crowd though!.
Matches
Tito Santana Vrs The Executioner-Winner Tito Santana. This was an OK Match, nothing spectacular, as it was just your typical filler opening, the crowd was hot for it though so, anyways Tito wins with the figure four. ** out of 5
S.D Jones Vrs King Kong Bundy-Winner King Kong Bundy. This match was of course crap, because it only lasted about 9 seconds!, King Kong Bundy wins with the avalanche and his splash. BOMB out of 5
Matt Borne Vrs Ricky Steamboat-Winner Ricky Steamboat. This was an OK match, but again nothing spectacular, Ricky made this match better then it should have been though, Ricky wins with the flying cross body off the top. ** out of 5
David Sanmartino Vrs Brutus Beefcake-Winner Double DQ. This was a mediocre match overall, Brutus was still young, however the crowd was really hot for Bruno and David, and the managers (Lucious Johnny Valiant) and Bruno got into so that was kind of fun. *1/2 out of 5
Intercontinental Championship. Greg "The Hammer Valentine"(C) Vrs Junkyard Dog-Winner Junkyard Dog, reverse decision. This was a decent if unspectacular match, Greg is always solid in the ring, and JYD was fun, Greg originally won the match by using the ropes but Tito came out and argued after so the Ref reversed it. **1/2 out of 5
WWE Tag team titles. Mike Rotundo(IRS) and Barry Windham(champions) Vrs Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik-Winner Volokoff, and The Iron Sheik. This was a so so match, nothing really exciting, but the crowd was hot for Rotundo and Windham, anyways Volkoff and Sheik win with the help of Freddie Blassie's cane. ** out of 5
$15,000 slam match. Big John Studd Vrs Andre The Giant-Winner Andre The Giant. This was entertaining if nothing else, wouldn't really call it a wrestling match, but the end was funny with Bobby stealing the money anyway. **1/2 out of 5
Women's Championship. Leilani Kai(C) Vrs Wendi Richter-Winner Wendi Richter. This was a solid women's title match up, the crowd was hot for Wendi, and they took some good bumps, Cyndi Lauper was fun, anyways Wendi won with reversing the high cross body. *** out of 5
Hulk Hogan&Mr. T Vrs Rowdy Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff-Winner Hulk Hogan and Mr T. This was very entertaining the 1st wrestlemania event ever, Hogan was entertaining and Mr. T wasn't all that bad, Hogan got a huge pop, and lots of fun stuff happened, anyways Hogan and T won with Cowboy Bob Orton accidentally hitting Orndorff with the cast. ***1/2 out of 5
Overall a must see for every wrestling fan since it was the 1st Wrestlemania ever, other then that there's really nothing to get excited about, but I'll give it a *** out of 5 due to it being the 1st Wrestlemania.
WRESTLEMANIA 2:
This is a barely above average Wrestlemania, is nothing really that great, and the Idea of using three different locations was just dumb in my opinion!. The Main event while good, was still a bit disappointing, especially after the very good buildup, and some of the matches were too short for my tastes, although I did enjoy the celebrity introductions, and the crowds were reasonably hot for all 3.
Matches "Magnificent Muraco" Vrs Paul Orndorff-Winner Double DQ. This was a mediocre match, that was too short to really make much of it, anyways it ends in a double DQ, not really worth talking too much about. *1/2 out of 5
Intercontinental Championship. "Macho Man" Randy Savage Vrs George "The Animal Steele-Winner Macho Man Randy Savage. This was entertaining, in a goofy sort for way, mainly due to the Machoman, he is just such an incredible wrestler, and Steele's goofy antics were fun, anyways Macho Man wins with his feet on the ropes. **1/2 out of 5
George Welles Vrs Jake "The Snake" Roberts-Winner Jake The Snake. Basically just a squash match for Jake, it was really mediocre, Jake wins with the DDT. * out of 5
"Rowdy Rody Piper" Vrs Mr. T in a boxing match-Winner Mr.T by DQ. This was a surprisingly rather entertaining boxing match, that had some fun antics by Roddy, Mr.T wins by DQ after Piper shoves the ref, and Piper got a lot of face pops!!, even though he was supposed to be a major heel. **1/2 out of 5
Women's Championship Velvet Mcintyre Vrs The Fabulous Moolah-Winner Moolah. This was too short to make anything out of it, Moolah wins when Velvet misses a splash off the top rope. BOMB out of 5
FLAG match. Corporal Kirschner Vrs Nikolai Volkoff-Winner The Corporal. This was a bad match, that was thankfully short, crowd was hot for Kirschner though, anyways The Corporal wins by using Blassie's cane. * out of 5
20 Man battle royal-Winner Andre The Giant. This was a decent if unspectacular battle royal, that had a decent amount of action it, crowed booed loudly when "The Fridge got eliminated, and I must say having the football players in was entertaining, anyways Andre wins by tossing The Hit-man out. **1/2 out of 5
Tag Team Titles match. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine" and Brutus Beefcake Vrs The Bulldogs-Winner The Bulldogs. This was a great tag team match, and the best match on the show in my opinion, as there was lots of solid wrestling and it moved by quick, the bulldogs won after head butting Valentine. ***1/2 out of 5
Hercules Vrs Ricky Steamboat-Winner Steamboat. This was an average match, nothing bad but nothing good, Steamboat made it watchable though, and he wins with the flying cross body off the top. ** out of 5
Adrian Adonis Vrs Uncle Elmer-winner Adonis. This was a terrible match, that was boring and rather pointless actually, and not worth talking about, anyways Adonis wins with a splash off the top. BOMB out of 5
The Funk Brothers Vrs Tito Santana and The Junkyard Dog-Winner The Funk Brothers. This was a pretty decent match up actually as Terry Funk took some good bumps for that time, and it moved quickly enough, anyways The funks win with the help of Jimmy's mega phone. **1/2 out of 5
Steel Cage WWE Championship. Hulk Hogan(C) Vrs King Kong Bundy-Winner Hulk Hogan. This was a good and entertaining match up, but also quite disappointing considering the awesome buildup, Hogan got a huge pop, and it has some blood too and it's exciting, anyways Hogan wins by climbing over the cage. *** out of 5
Overall Barely above average worth the watch but not much else. **1/2 out of 5(barely)
Missed Opportunity
Although this DVD set is good value (in that's quite inexpensive compared to the Complete Anthology collection) and the events it presents are interesting in their own right, it fails because you really are getting what you pay for. Ie not a lot.
The lack of extra features is understandable, because beyond showing bits of other shows from around the same time (such as Wrestling Challenge) to build up and elaborate on the storylines, there's not a whole lot that could be added.
The trouble is that the lack of features just draws your attention to the fact that the discs included are just straight copies of the old VHS editions of Wrestlemania I and 2 that Silver Vision put out. Nothing has been done to clean them up or improve the sound and, most crucially, they were hacked to bits way back when to fit the running time of VHS, and this hasn't been rectified. The editing is clumsy and intrusive, one match has the first few minutes cut off while another is moved away from before they manage to explain the count out ending that the commentators didn't notice.
It's a bit disappointing really as it makes a trade off for your options when buying these events. Either this cheaper, heavily edited version that still uses the old WWF name and logo, or the more expensive, "censored" version that's more complete.
Wrestlemania 1 and 2
As stated in earlier review there are no extras on these discs but the quality of sound and picture is very good. Not quite sure about the reviews referring to region access as most dvd players in europe can view all regions. If you enjoy seeing the wrestlers of the 80's then this is for you, hopefully other discs to be released might include extras but we will see.
