Brenda's Best Album since her debut 20 years ago.5
Every track on this cd is superb!!! Tracks 1-4 are the standouts, but really every track stands on its own. If you love Brenda and appreciate her lyrics and unique vocal stylings, this cd is for you. Think Brenda Russel meets Sade, Michael Franks and Norah Jones!!!

Not a Bad Album, But I Wasn't Feeling It3
I love Brenda Russell, and have always admired her ability to stay true to her own distinct sound. With the exception of Sade, no one can create a seductively smooth and languid sound like Brenda can. But on this new release, Brenda attempts to expand her musical world, experimenting further with Afro/Caribbean rhythms, and replacing her trusted group of top ace LA session men with london based musicans. I can't say I'm knocked out with the changes. I just don't feel and connect with this album in the way I have with Brenda's previous albums.

It doesn't help matters that the album lacks a truly standout cut. Musically, most of the melodies on this album are fleeting, the one exception being "Let Somebody Know." Diana Ross recorded this song a while back, and turned in a wonderfully delicate and nuanced performance. Brenda's take on the song isn't as good. Not sure what happened here, but Brenda's vocal stylings are just not suited to this song.

I wish I could recommend and endorse some other tracks on this album, but I really can't. The title track and "I Know you by Heart," are pleasant enough cuts, but I grew tired of them after about the 5th listen. You have been warned.
