A Band Reborn5
I was half expecting that this new concert DVD (and the matching CD) would be a nice rehash of the old songs, plus a few of the new ones from the Proterra album.

Wow, was I ever wrong! This is fantastic. Their re-arrangements of old songs is brilliant, bringing them to life all over again. This was no stepped-down show, this was a huge production, and the boys (and whatever meticulous production staff must have been involved) have pulled off a huge win.

A rarity in today's corporate-controlled music industry: 30-year-old Scottish band avoids the big label, keeps doing things their way, is forced to change lead singers after 25 years, and triumph.

The setting, outdoors with ancient Stirling Castle lit up in the background, and of course footage of the beautiful Scottish landscape, compliments their sound as always. Such an upbeat, inspiring, stirring kind of music. Well done; it doesn't get any better than this.

30 years of music from the heart.5
Picture the scene: Stirling castle Scotland, two RAF tornadoes fly-past overhead as Bruce's vocals come soaring over the vast gathered crowd with the opening bars of "going home", and against the backdrop of a beautiful crimson sunset the band launches into what must be one their most energy charged concerts ever!
What a way to celebrate 30 years of runrig! - and in the way that runrig do best, with a live open air concert! The atmosphere of this DVD really captures the evening, though to have actually been there, must have been simply stunning!!
As Bruce so rightly says "the longevity of the band '30 years' speaks to the heart of the music" This is certainly music from the heart.

Choosing what songs to include from Runrig's vast catalogue must have been a difficult decision, but I think the boys have done a great job, including earlier songs such as "Protect & Survive" and "Rocket to the Moon" right up to date with "Maymorning" and "Proterra" as well as classics like "Loch lomond" and "Hearts of Olden Glory" - (one my all time favourites!)
It's not just album versions of the songs either, almost all of the songs have been given brand new arrangements, "Big sky" for example is fast becoming one of my favourite tracks and the Glasgow Gaelic choir make a very welcome return, really bringing "Faileas air an airigh" to life, also there is a brilliant new slow version of "Book of golden stories" it's great to hear the bands newest member 'Brian Hurren' contributing vocals on this track, I really hope we get to here more of him on hopefully many more Runrig DVD's and albums to come!

As with any Runrig concert the crowd participation really makes the atmosphere electric - joining in the songs and many waving Scottish (& Canadian!) flags, proving that this really must have been The Day of Days!

Inspiring and uplifting5
It really doesn't get any better than this. And despite changes in personnel the band contine to go from strength to strength. I would say I have pretty eclectic musical tastes but no matter how many CDs and DVDs I buy, I can't help but "keep coming home" to this one. It is truly inspiring and uplifting. If you need an emotional boost then go out any buy this, crank up the volume, dim the lights and bounce round your living room with 6000 ardent fans on Stirling Castle Esplanade. Superb.
