Good compilation of a much hated musician (give it a minute before making up your mind, you might be surprised)
I've had a look at a bunch of compilations and none of them have all the obvious highlights which I've been told are: Don't Pay the Ferryman, Spanish Train, A Spaceman Came Travelling, Patricia the Stripper and Crusader.
This compilation had more of those tracks on it than any of the others so I gave it a shot. Some songs are blandly middle of the road but there are some good songs on here.
Spectrum specialise in cheap compilations were they take two or three well known hits and then pad out the rest of the disc with obscure album tracks. I don't know De Burgh's back catalogue so I can't say if this is a good selection of songs, but I think it was a good purchase (although I felt dirty about it for weeks afterwards).
Don't conform, decide for yourself about this much maligned musician. I liked most of it. Lots of nice ambient keyboards and his voice has a coarsely smooth quality to it. Spanish Train (God & Devil play poker for a man's soul) is a truly great song. A Spaceman Came Travelling is a strange sci-fi take on the nativity and Patricia the Stripper is a funny 20's set story about a courtcase involving a stripper. And there's no Lady In Red on this compilation.
Note 8/5/07: I have since bought another compilation called Notes From Planet Earth. Don't Pay the Ferryman is nothing great, Ship To Shore is dreadful and Lady In Red is decent, if unremarkable. I would still recommend this Spectrum compilation over any others currently available.
Spanish Train keeps on getting better with every listen. Iron Maiden could cover it and no one would bat an eye lid as long as they don't look up the writing credits.
