The Greatest Spectacular of all Time! WMXX!
The WWE deffinetely succeded in making Wrestlemania XX on March 14th 2004 in Madison Square Garden the most successful PPV of all time, even with some card fillers and no Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart. The 3 Disc Set DVD lasts around 8 hours long with almost 5 hours of it being the actual event which is as follows:
WWE United States Championship Match:
John Cena vs Big Show.
(4/5) This was a typical Wrestlemania opener and both men delivered a good match - Well Done Big Show.
Fatal Four Way WWE World Tag Team Championship:
Booker T and RVD vs The Dudley Boys vs La Resistance vs Mark Jindrak and Garrison Cade.
(3.5/5) An alright match which deserved a bigger build up. Some good moves produced but not the best tag match iv'e seen.
Christian vs Chris Jericho.
(4.5-5/5) Excellant match with a surprising ending. One of the best matches on the card and well deserved.
Handicap Match:
The Rock and Sock Connection vs Ric Flair, Randy Orton and Batista.
(4.5-5/5) Another outstanding match by all men with some funny moments. It was well worth Mick Foley returning to wrestle after 4 years and The Rock after almost 1 year. The encounter could have done wiyh some blood and weapons though.
Playboy evening Gown Match:
Torrie Wilson and Sable vs Stacy Kiebler and Miss Jackie.
(2.5/5) for wrestling and (5/5) for everything else. Wow this deffinetely didn't dissapoint.
WWE 10 Man Cruiserweight Open Championship Match:
Included Cruiserweights like Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman and Chavo Guerrero etc.
(4.5/5) Sperb and the best cruiserweight match ever with lots of risk taking moves. The match was a bit too short though.
Inerpromotional match: Special Referee: Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Brock Lesner vs Goldberg.
(3.5/5) A big dissapointment to a match that was built up the most and the origional contender for the main event. You saw there main moves though which is something. Best part was Austins actions and the crowds reaction of which i was part of. The two wrestlers havn't been in the WWE since so it's an historic match still as they are unlikely to return.
Fatal Four Way WWE Tag Team Championship:
Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty vs APA vs The Bashams vs Shelton Benjamen and Charlie Haas.
(3.5/5) Quite a good short match actually with not enough build up again. Ignore the crowds non reaction during this - they were still pissed off.
WWE Womens Championship:
Molly Holly vs Victoria.
(4/5) Boy these women can wrestle, but who cares Molly had to be shaved bald which was a (5/5) Wrestlemania moment.
WWE Championship Match:
Kurt Angle vs Eddie Guerrero.
(5/5) Great match by two great athletes. It was quite technical aswell - what a mania match.
The Undertaker with Paul Bearer vs Kane.
(4.5/5) for wrestling and (5/5) for the return of the taker which will stay in every ones minds for years to come. This was one of the biggest reactions of all time. The match would have been better with a stipulation and more high impact moves and resiliance by kane but still was fantastic.
Triple Threat WWE World Heavyweight Championship (No Disqualifications):
Triple H vs Shawn Michaels vs Chris Benoit.
(5/5*) In my eyes the best match of the night and the greatest of all time. The fans deffinetely left the arena happy. The Backlash rematch was a cheap rip off by the way.
Overall i give the card (5/5) and deserves it respectfully.
The DVD extras also are the best ever produced by the WWE with two feature length documentary. I give the extras also (5/5).
I highly reccomend WWE Wrestlemania XX on DVD (not the cut down version on video). This event and Wrstlemania 17 and 19 are the best PPV's in WWE History and this is what you call history as Wrestlemania XX also featured the 2004 Hall of Fame Class and Vine Mcmahon even thanked the fans. The beginning entry promo was also brilliant as you saw Vince, Shane and his new baby Mcmahon together smiling. The ending was also perfect as it aall begins again.
Thankyou for reading my review and i hope you found it helpful.
Exactly how a PPV should be.
WWE US Championship Match : 7/10
A worthwhile opener. Solid performances from both Big Show & John Cena. (He can't rap though.)
World Tag Championship Match : 6/10
An above average title match - a good performance from Booker T & Rob Van Dam, but not the ground-breaker it could have been.
Chris Jericho vs Christian : 8/10
Entertaining stuff, a little plot-heavy but some good twists to the tale and a good bout to match.
Rock'n'Sock vs Evolution : 8/10
Great to see Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Mick Foley in action again. Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista & Ric Flair) are also very good in a thoroughly enjoyable match-up.
Playboy Evening Gown Match Up : 2/10
Depends on what floats your boat. I wrote this review based on the wrestling, so this really is a no-brainer. I'm sure that nobody will actually be watching this for the wrestling, though.
WWE Cruiserweight Championship Open : 8/10
A good, fast paced match, if a little on the short side. Some great high-flying and technical stuff, exactly what you'd expect from the WWE cruiserweights.
Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar : 5/10
Oh dear. A real disappoinment, though a lot was going on behind the scenes (Goldberg leaving and Lesnar's defection to the NFL) and this wasn't lost on the audience, who were quite unforgiving, to be honest. Steve Austin saved this match from being truly mediocre, but this was undoubtedbly a wasted opportunity.
WWE Tag Team Championship : 6/10
Marginally better than it's Raw counterpart earlier shown. This match seemed a bit 'thrown together' in my opinion - again it wasn't as good as it could have been.
WWE Women's Championship : 6/10
Above average, actually. A good bout from Victoria, though why Molly Holly had to have her head shaved wasn't really fully explained. But then, I didn't really care anyway.
WWE Championship : 9/10
Superb technical performances from both Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle, a well deserved build-up and some good twists and turns that keep the match in high gear. Excellent.
Undertaker vs Kane : 8/10
I must admit to being an old-school Taker fan, so the theatrics and build-up of this match were well received. A good bout followed, with some superb vintage Taker wrestling, although Kane didn't put up half the fight I'd hoped he would. This makes the match a little predictable and more than a bit biased towards the Undertaker, which prevents it from being the epic it so very nearly was.
World Heavyweight Championship : 10/10
A spectacular match. Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Chris Benoit were all on outstanding form, with a great deal of drama and action woven into the bout. Bloodshed abound and plenty of trademark wrestling manoevers and techniques puts this one up amongst my all-time favourites.
Extras : 8/10
This WAS a surprise. As well as the usual space-fillers on the extras DVD, such as pre & post match interviews and promos, I was pleased to see and particularly enjoyed watching the Top 10 Wrestlemania Matches with Ric Flair. 'The Mania of Wrestlemania' is well worth watching, with some surprising depth into both the event and the superstars. The WWE Quiz and History sections were also well received.
Overall : 10/10
It isn't cheap, but has to be in any serious WWE fan's collection. This is exactly how a main event should be. I must add that it's refreshing to see an Extras DVD included that's actually worth having a look at.
It all begins again
Although I wouldn't say the overall show was great, I'm giving WM XX five stars because WWE done the right thing by letting the fans go home happy. The booking for the main matches was excellent and lived up to the hype WWE were building for a full year. Also Madison Square Garden proved to be a fitting venue for this supercard extravaganza.
Here are my reviews:
United States Championship:
The Big Show Vs John Cena 3/5
Not a great match because The Big Show was made to do all the work, but it did feature a pretty cool ending.
FATAL 4 WAY TAG TEAM MATCH
World Tag Team Championship:
RVD & Booker T Vs Dudley Boyz Vs La Resistance Vs Cade & Jindrak 3/5
An obvious cardfiller but not the worst match of the night.
Christian Vs Chris Jericho 5/5
Brilliant match that I felt was the best of the night, also featured a surprised ending.
HANDICAP MATCH
Ric Flair, Batista & Randy Orton Vs The Rock & Mick Foley 4/5
A great match that featured the long awaited return of the Rock 'N' Sock connection.
CRUISERWEIGHT GAUNTLET MATCH 5/5
Cruiserweight Championship:
It featured Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman, Jamie Noble, Ultimo Dragon, Tajiri, Akio, funaki, Shannon Moore, Nunzio and the champion Chavo Guerrero. It was an amazing high flying match!
Brock Lesnar Vs Goldberg
(Guest Referee: Stone Cold Steve Austin) 2/5
Dissapointment of the night by far. Fans had been waiting for to see this for a year and were sevearly let down. Also (as it stands) this is both guys last match in WWE. Thankfully, Stone Cold gives us all what we all want to see at the end.
FATAL 4 WAY TAG TEAM MATCH
WWE Tag Team Championship:
Rikishi & Scotty 2 Hotty Vs The Basham Bros. Vs APA Vs Haas & Benjamin 4/5
Again another card filler but still a very good match.
PLAYBOY EVENING GOWN MATCH
Miss Jackie & Stacey Keibler Vs Torrie Wilson & Sable 2/5
Four hot women fighting eachother in their underwear is great yes, just don't expect to see a great match.
HAIR VS TITLE MATCH
Womens Championship:
Victoria Vs Molly Holly 3/5
If Molly lost she would have to shave her head bald! I think that's all I have to say.
WWE Championship:
Eddie Guerrero Vs Kurt Angle 5/5
A great match as expected with a funny ending.
Kane Vs The Undertaker (W/Paul Bearer) 4/5
Great match but I can't help but feel that the return of Taker's "deadman" gimmick was a bit of a anti-climax.
TRIPLE THREAT MATCH
World Heavyweight Championship:
Triple H Vs Shawn Michaels Vs Chris Benoit 5/5
An excellent main event with an emotional ending. A great end to a great night of action.
I wouldn't say that this Wrestlemania was the best there's ever been, but this is one that should be part of your collection.
