Manufacturer's Description
In The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Silver Earring, gamers can take on the role of Sherlock, the legendary detective himself, or his sidekick Watson. The mystery begins shortly after the murder of Sir Bromsby where players are required to put their detective skills into place and hunt down the culprit. On their quest for the truth, virtual detectives will encounter numerous unusual characters and it is their job to decide who to trust.

If all that is not taxing enough, attention to detail will be key as missing vital clues such as foot traces and strands of hair could have dire consequences for the investigation. At the end of the level players will be asked a series of questions designed to ensure they were paying full attention and that they spotted all the clues.

Includes free DVD: Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, starring Basil Rathbone

Good concept - some gripes though3
Playing sleuth is appealing and this game will give budding detectives many hours of entertainment. The graphics are good and there is plenty of absorping gameplay and scenes.

The main gripe is that if clues are not all found within a setting, the game will not allow you to move on. Quite right you may say, but some "clues"(!) as to how and where you are missing information would be helpful. Becasue of this I spent literally hours trying to pick up missed items, which were not readily apparent - this involved going around in every decreasing circles and an ever growing degree of frustration.

Take this element away, along with a quirky wayfinding format, with the need to continually change your mouse pointer from magnifying glass to tape measure etc didn't help with the flow.

Unfortunately these gripes were sufficient to spoil a game that had good graphics and atmosphere.

I would still recommend it to anyone who likes any adventure genre game, but beware of the above!

Have still yet to solve the mystery, which in itself has provided longevity.

Happy detecting!!

fab!5
This is an atmospheric game, with fab graphics and a decent plot. The locations and characters have been scrupulously researched and the short movies inserted throughout the game are excellent, with convincing dialogue (mostly poor Watson being harangued by Holmes). Finding the clues and solving the puzzles was good fun - and occasionally maddening! - and kept my interest until the solution. The music chosen (Mendelssohn, Dvorak and others) adds to the game's atmosphere and there were some nice touches to amuse Holmes and Watson lovers like myself.

Average, and a knightmare to install...3
I bought this game as I am a fan of the whole 'point and click' adventure game thing. But I was disappointed with the gameplay. It's ok, but the storyline is predicatble and the sound effects poor. The graphics are average and the playability is annoying. You have to get the cursor just in the right place or it won't be effective.

And all this after spending two hours trying to get the thing to install...all I kept getting was a black screen and streaming audio. I could hear the game but couldn't see it! I discovered that this is a common problem and is down to graphics drivers. I eventually sorted it out (thanks to the website listed on the back of the game) but was annoyed that the game did not come with a troubleshooter. It could have prevented all my frustration!

All in all, it's not a bad game but it's not the best I've ever played either. Try it and see what you think.
