Manufacturer's Description
Developed by Rebellion (Aliens Vs Predator, Judge Dredd), World War Zero is an all-action first-person title spanning 19 war-torn stages. Presenting an alternate history concept at the heart of its plot, the game is set in a shattered 1964 where the first World War never ended. The pivotal Russian October Revolution has seen history diverted as the insane Baron Ungenberg has crushed the Bolshevik charge.

World War Zero features first-person-based gameplay, thus offering the best possible view of its stealth and combat-based action. Using a mixture of covert and combat skills, the player must go behind enemy lines and pass through the devastated Germany where Ungenberg and his powerbase is located. As such, missions take the player from the Western Front, through the Anton Denikin Russo-Mongol front, into the occupied Wolfenburg and ultimately into the Berlin-based fission centre where the Baron's experiments are nearing their conclusion.

With its incredibly realistic environments, stunning enemy AI and gripping plot, World War Zero is one of the most remarkable first-person titles to grace Sony's PlayStation 2. The brutality of war is perfectly detailed, while the horrors of a timeline where The Great War has stretched into its fiftieth year create an atmospheric title that sets new standards within the action genre.

Interesting scenario...MOH 19644
I have to say, I like this game. I bought it some months ago, and have only just had to chance to write a review.

The game revolves around the 'what if' scenario that it is 1964, and the First World War hasn't actually finished. World War Two never happened, and Stalin was overthrown by some psychopathic Russo-Mongol dictator called Baron Ugenberg.

Let's start with the gameplay. You start in what is obviously the 1964 equivalent of a WW1 trench system. Starting with a shotgun (a useless weapon at the best of times), you make your way through the trench, to locate firstly a machine pistol, grenades, and finally a snipers rifle. Once this is complete, you're out into the battlefield, to start your missions. The first of these, is to locate an old church, taking out mutitudes of enemy's en route, either alone, or with squad members, which leads on to an enemy underground complex. From then on, the game progresses, through a ruined town (very nicely done...I liked the rain effect), and on to an enemy germ warfare production plant, a human research complex, an armoured train, and so on, finally ending up at the Reichstag in Berlin.

The graphics? Not top range, but they are pretty good nonetheless. I've seen far worse. The enemy have been rendered using a 'rag doll' technique, that makes them 'fall' a little more realistically. I also liked the aircraft. Whilst these take no active part in attacking you, these do add a lot of atmosphere to the game.

There are a good variety of weapons. I like the fact that these have been thoughtfully designed, to account that they are 1964-type natural progressions from those of forty years previous. No M16 type weapons here...

Once you get into the latter stages (there are a lot of levels, and you won't complete this in a couple of hours believe me), you pick up some of the more exotic weaponry. Notably something called the Consortium Gun (a very fast firing, but heavy hitting sub machine gun...listen to it in stereo!), and a Minigun (a la Terminator 2). A beauty, which will leave you grinning from ear to ear, once you let rip.

There are one or two other things to look out for in the game. Unless you kill an enemy completely, he may be wounded. Sometimes, he will simply surrender, or is he concealing a grenade? The inclusion of 'suicide dogs' with explosives strapped to their backs surprised me, not a new idea though, as the Russian did use this form of attack during the last war for destroying enemy tanks. There are mines strewn here and there, including a version that emits a hallucinogenic gas. You might wonder what the hell's going on to start with, if you should trip one of these, but they aren't lethal (unless you are in the middle of a firefight)...the effects are a little trippy though. There are tanks in the game from time to time, and some of the main weapons in these can be utilised. Beware the female snipers with the cigarettes and sunglasses too.

The final level, whilst difficult, (you have to naturally destroy the ultimate enemy, while he's wearing an armoured battle suit and armed to the teeth), is not impossible. It'll take somewhere in the region of 15-30 minutes though (well it did me at least) to defeat him. Just a matter of working out the best course of attack...I'm not telling you, you'll have to find that out for yourself.

For: Good selection of weapons. Not vast, but certainly enough variety in there...that Minigun! Good graphics, and some nice weather environment touches. I would give it four and a half stars, but Amazon don't allow me to do that!

Against: I can't find anything, and I hope that Rebellion do a follow up at some point.

a very good game4
Firstly this game is great fun but i am reminded medal of hounor games. The controls are simple and easy to learn and the graphics are not too shabby at all, there is lots of detail which is easy to see when you are zoomed in (with a sniper rifle or semi-automatic rifle). In the game there is a wide variety of grenades and guns and plenty of enimies to kill. The enimies range from snipers to tanks to dogs with explosives strapped to them. One really cool thing in the game is wounded soilders on the ground either put their hands up (so you pot them in the head) or pull the pin on a grenade and try to take you with them. The story line is good but is hard to pick up at the start (maybe thats just me). Some things about the game which get me down are, when you are playing on the hardest difficulty (suicide) you have to unload a hole clip into someone to kill them. Also the game is a bit short with and end boss whom you have never met or heard of before. But all in all this game is great value for money. So i hope this was helpful (its my first review) and i'm sorry for the spelling. Bye Yal

World War Interesting4
I was attracted to the storyline and being a fan of 1st Person shooters, thought I give it a go. Graphics aren't as good as MOH but not bad either. I thought the storyline started off well but fizzeled out by the end. Liked some of the weapons but to be honest thought most of them wren't too original. Some of the levels are quite interesting to play such as the huge train but going through the platform can be a bit boring as it doesnt change very much. Liked the sound effects on all levels and thought the sounds going off around you added to the game pulse especially if you have 5.1 Dolby.
Overall, an interesting alternavte story but sightly let down by unoriginal parts and graphics.
