Synopsis
When his employer suddenly dies, toy shop assistant and train enthusiast Finbar McBride (Peter Dinklage) inherits an abandoned railway station in rural New Jersey. A dwarf who tends to avoid social contact whenever possible, Fin treks out to the property and moves in. However, his new isolated, quiet life is disrupted by Joe (Bobby Cannavale), the young, talkative vendor of a nearby roadside refreshment stand, and Olivia (Patricia Clarkson), a reclusive artist who is grieving the loss of her son. As Joe and Olivia slowly bring Fin out of his shell, all three people are affected by their newfound friendships.
Written and directed by Thomas McCarthy, THE STATION AGENT wonderfully mixes drama and comedy in a beautiful countryside setting. Although the storyline acknowledges that the main character is a dwarf and refers to this on numerous occasions, there is much more to the character of Fin McBride than his short stature. As Fin, Dinklage gives an outstandingly nuanced performance, one that is perfectly complemented by Cannavale's happy-go-lucky Joe and Clarkson's mourning Olivia. The movie also features excellent supporting turns by Michelle Williams and Raven Goodwin. Touching but never sappy, THE STATION AGENT is a charming film that easily joins the ranks of other quirky rural dramas such as THE STRAIGHT STORY, it's an absolute joy.
Customer Reviews
A review is difficult to do for this film
I really enjoyed this film, but it's difficult to provide a review for it without it sounding a really tedious movie. It's definitely a gentle film, it's insightful and thought-provoking, but it makes you smile a lot too. I think if you liked 'Into the Wild', then you'll like this too - not that they're similar in story, but they are similar in part as they deal with the fact that it's not what you have or look like that's important in life, but it's all about people and feelings and relationships and how people you meet can sometimes change your life. It might even make you want to strike up conversations with people you've never met before. See now you think this is a mushy film - it isn't. Oh just watch it.
A little gem
Have to be honest and admit that the first time i watched this film i got to the end and thought ... it that it ? I'd read great reviews when it came out and was really looking forward to seeing it then was pretty let down . I tucked it away for a while (18 months or so) then came across it 2 days ago , decided to give it one last try before donating it to the local charity shop and......wow . How did i miss it first time round ? This film is really beautiful and sad and insightful and..just totally bloody fantastic . I love it to death now and even watched it 2 nights in a row , the second time with the director/actors commentary , something i NEVER do . But thats how much i love it . Superb little gem of a film which i will treasure for a while yet .
Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful!
If you like films about real people who form real relationships.. this films for you.
The fact that the main character is a dwarf really doesn't mean anything.. he's an outcast, a loner.. the size of him is neither here nor there.
The sweetness of this film can't be measured, but it's in no way "sweet" in a pink girly way.. This film, if given a chance will touch anyone, the performances are exceptional as are the script and direction.. this really is film making at it's best.
I wouldn't usually write a review but if my words help the dvd get sold just once more, then my aim's achieved, it deserves to be seen be all!
