New roster members, New Champions and a Newfound Hardcore Legend Killer
Taking place on Chris Benoit day, in Chris Benoit's hometown of Edmonton, with Chris Benoit having his first World Heavyweight title defence in the Main Event while his family watch on, Backlash 2004 was very much Chris Benoit's PPV, which is likely the reason why this PPV was discontinued on DVD recently.
Backlash has always been the PPV to come after Wrestlemania, and this usually results in a load of rematches from Wrestlemania. However, 2004 was different. There were rematches, but the Draft Lottery that took place a week after Wrestlemania meant that fresh talent was arriving on each roster, and Backlash avoided becoming a Wrestlemania rehash and actually became a decent PPV in it's own right.
Ric Flair VS Shelton Benjamin
This was Shelton Benjamin's first PPV match as a Singles competitor as he was transferred to Raw in the Draft Lottery and pulled away from Charlie Haas (a wise decision). Having defeated Triple H in his Raw debut, it appeared as though he may embark on the mother of all pushes, and, while he was for a bit, it inexplicably ended a couple of years later, and he was put back with Charlie Haas. Nonetheless, this was the start of his push, and kudos should go to him for actually daring to have his first major Singles match against a veteran such as Flair. The match was solid enough. It won't be remembered in years to come, but as far as Singles debuts come, it was a confident beginning. 4/5
Jonathan Coachman VS Tajiri
With Coach in the match, this was never going to be a Classic, but they bafflingly tried to turn Coach into a proper wrestler, rather than just play on the comedy value. The real scandal though was in the use of Tajiri. His Draft from SmackDown to Raw was good at first, as it gave him the chance to turn Face, and drop his dull Heel persona. But to make his first rivalry be with the Coach just showed further misuse of an excellent wrestler. Add to the match the (quickly dropped) push of Garrison Cade beginning, and this was completely misguided. 2/5
Handicap Match
Chris Jericho VS Christian & Trish Stratus
This was the first Wrestlemania rematch, with Trish slammed in, because it was pretty much necessary. There isn't a lot to be said about this one. It was just as good as all their matches, and the presence of Trish didn't hurt it one bit. Oh, and Jericho's "Wasn't Babe a talking pig?" line never fails to make me laugh 4/5
Women's Championship
Lita VS Victoria
Slightly too under-promoted, especially considering that it was two of the strongest Divas there are going at it for the title. Once again, this was a solid match, but just like Shelton's, no one remembered it for too long after. Add to that a pretty stupid after-match ending to build up a rivalry that never actually happened. 4/5
Intercontinental Championship
No Holds Barred, Evolution Banned From Ringside
Mick Foley VS Randy Orton
In one of the Interviews before this match, Orton claimed that he would earn respect through this match, and he wasn't wrong. This was amazing. Incredibly violent, and, at that point, no one expected Orton to take half the bumps he did. Foley was his usual great Hardcore self, but the real star was Orton, who arguably took stronger bumps than Foley throughout the match. Orton was deservedly elevated to Main Event status after this match, and Triple H's talk with Orton following the match says all that needs to be said. 5/5
La Resistance VS The Hurricane & Rosey
Sadly for these four guys, they had to follow the Hardcore match. Not only did we have two `meh' Tag Teams going at it, but the only purpose of it was to build up Eugene's upcoming debut, and JR & King pretty much ignored what was going on, and kept talking about the Hardcore match. It didn't work as a breather either, as it completely killed the pace of the PPV. This one should have been left off the card, but, if you're actually interested enough to pay attention, it's not too bad a match. 3/5
Edge VS Kane
This was Edge's first match in 14 months, and given that I'm a massive fan of Edge, I was always going to be looking forward to this. Kane, luckily, kept on better form than he can sometimes be, and this was a nice way to bring Edge in without thrusting him straight into Main Event matches. 4/5
World Heavyweight Championship
The Final Encounter
Chris Benoit VS Shawn Michaels VS Triple H
The major issue with this was that they were following their phenomenal Wrestlemania match. This was still a very good match, but Mania XX was always going to be hard to follow, and this wasn't quite as good. Although, based on the quality of the Mania match, not quite as good can still be pretty damn good. This is proof. 4/5
a mixed card
Backlash 2004 came quickly after the heels of wrestlemania 20 which was a great event so this event had alot to live up too,and while it contained some great matches, there was a tendancy for the odd filler moment which upset the balance and quality of the card.
The opening match was fantastic, shelton benjamin who at this point was on a role of great form against ric flair, this match was highly skilled as you could imagine and both men took the mantle and raised it,the outcome wasnt even that important as this was simply how an event should be opened.
Next up was a match that wasnt that hot of itself, john coachman (the coach) vs tajiri, this match didnt stamp its authority on the nights events leading to a cheap win and more fuel for a feud that was never gonna make its way to a main event but i have seen worse.
A handicap match followed, chris jericho against christian and trish stratus, this match wasnt a patch on their wrestlemania 20 match even though most of the moves and the tempo were shared, but when you single the match out then it isnt that bad,not that bad at all.
next up was the ladies title match, victoria vs challenger, lita, this wasnt a bad match,i wouldnt run around hoops for it or anything of that kind but it was ok,victoria is a fine wrestler with lots of good moves as is lita so they complemented each other well so no real shame in this match.
Next up was the match of the night, hell, maybe even match of the year,a no holds barred match between randy orton and cactus jack, over 20 minutes of blood spilling, pain driven, torture and class, hard to watch at times, impossible to look away quality. Both men put their hearts and souls into this and their bodies of course to make a real spectacle indeed, visually stunning and chilling this had it all,the winner was us the viewer in truth but lets say i was very happy with the outcome hey.
To follow that match and keep the quality up is almost futile and thats just what the wwe decided,to bring us a garbage match, rosie and the hurricane, worst gimmicks ever anyone! vs la resistance, who in themselves were never that consistent, this match was rotten and let the average score fall slightly.
Next up was a match with a history, edge vs kane, the match wasnt that good either dear readers but the finale was solid and this match gave way to a repeat of the main event of wrestlemania,a triple threat match between champ chris benoit who was fighting in his home town against triple h and shawn michaels, this was a good match but yet again wasnt a patch on the match at wrestlemania, when targeted as a single match on its own merits then it does the job,got a bit boring and static in parts but when it got going it had thrills and good wrestling along with some painful moments, not a real classic but a good main event.
There you have it folks, some stunning stuff and some run of the mill stuff and a match so bad i wouldnt mind a lobotomy to erase it from my mind but there you go,three stars out of 5 hey.
A Great Night
1. Shelton Benjamin vs. Rick Flair- This was a good way to start the ppv. I liked how we got alot of flair fans and alot of shelton fans. THe match was well paced and it was a good way to get the crowd started up. Good match. Winner Shelton Benjamin. Match Rating 8/10
2. The coach vs. Tajairi- Were did this come from. This was a horriable story line. The coach cant wrestle and if you are going to have tajairi wrestle at least put him in there with someone who has decent talent. Ok match but just a filler. Winner the coach. Match Rating 4/10.
3. Y2J vs. Trish and Christian in a handicap match- I really liked this match. First of it had alot of intensity coming in to the match because of there wrestlemania match. It was well booked so the crowd was not out of it because of the last match. Good paced action. I did not really like the end because it ended out of the blue. Still a good match. Winner Chris Jerico. Match Rating 8/10.
Victoria vs. Lita for the womens title- This was an above average womens match. It was great to see lita back in the ring and wrestle. It was just a decent match but above average for a womens match. Winner and still womens champ Victoria. Match Rating 6/10.
Mick Foley vs. Randy Orton ITC title match No holds Barred- Match of the night by far. This was non stop action the whole way this had a great storyline to it and brought the intensity to the match. Everything is used here tacks, barb wire bats trash cans more barb wire a sick table spot and just excellent action the whole way through. I wish Foley would have won but i can see why orton did and this started to lead to his title hunt. Winner and still itc champ randy orton. Match Rating 10/10.
6. La resistance vs. The hurrican and rosey- This was just an average tag match. I really hate the tag team division these days. There is not alot of talent at all. This was just to slow the crowd down after the last match it was decent. Winners the hurrican and rosey. Match Rating 6/10.
7. Edge vs. Kane- This was a preatty good match. I was expecting something a little better for edges return and also sience it is in canada. It was still good. Not alot to say about this match expect it was decent. Winner edge. Match Rating 7/10.
8. HHH vs. Shawn Michales vs. Chris Beniot for the WHT- This was the second best match of the night. This was not as good as there wrestlemania match but it was not far behind. I liked the idea to have this ppv in canada for beniot. It was preatty funny because hte crowd was more behind HHH than they were for shawn michales. Had a great spot were hebner came down and got booed bad to. Great match. Winner and still whc Chris Beniot. Match rating 10/10.
Well that raps up another. The rating that backlash 2004 will get is 80/80 which means it is an awsome ppv. It only got awsome by a percent but i would recomend u to pick this up. If u can tell me if you thought the review was helpful or not. Thank you for your time.
