Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
If Natasha Bedingfield's first two singles, feisty R&B anthem "Single" and chart-topper "These Words", suggested she's more than just Daniel's little sister, her debut album, Unwritten, is the confirmation. Better still, it proves she's a genuine pop star in the making with a staggering tally of potential hits. Aided and abetted by some of music's biggest hit makers, including Robbie Williams's former writing partner Guy Chambers, she reveals the true size of her ambition and potential, squaring up to every female chart icon going. The party hard electro-rock of "I'm A Bomb", the irrepressible optimism of the title track's chorus and "Drop Me In The Middle"'s slinky R&B strut, respectively have her taking on Pink, Nelly Furtado and Beyoncé and showing that she's a worthy contender. Add the slamming Gwen Stefani attitude of "If You're Gonna" with its boybaiting hook of "I'm looking for a guard dog not buying a Chihuahua" and the image of an independent, smart talking bombshell who's no one's pushover is complete. And Unwritten is her flawless statement of intent. --Dan Gennoe

From the Label
22-year-old Natasha Bedingfield has a voice to melt radios and a decade long passion for writing and singing. Her debut album Unwritten draws on a range of experiences and passions personal to her – from battling through the dating game ("Frogs And Princes"), and dealing with the trust issues of falling in love ("I Bruise Easily") to learning how to carpe diem ("If You’re Gonna Jump") and develop the confidence to take life and own it ("Unwritten"). Told from the viewpoint of a young woman with her head firmly screwed on, Unwritten is fuelled by lyrical sass and real-life suss throughout. Musically the album is inspired by a wide range of influences and styles, from the glam rock of "Silent Movie" through the muscular funk of "Single" to the orchestral majesty of "Wild Horses". The result is an album packed with winning songs and no irrelevant fillers.

Dead poets and drum machine5
Bold and irrepressible. Full of edge, life and energy. This album captures the innocence and freshness of youth, and reflects a moment of time when everything was falling into place for Bedingfield, when she could be overtly optimistic and enthusiastic while remaining utterly genuine.

Unwritten possesses a whole sound to it that feels completely original. Every track is beautifully and expertly produced. The songs consist of intelligent and inspirational lyrics that avoid all the usual pop clichés, and as a result are captivating and enthralling. Bedingfield is more than just a songwriter, she's a poet who is able to paint such a huge variety of amazing images in your mind as she sings.

But the high quality production on this album is not just down to Bedingfield alone - while there is no doubt she is an extremely talented singer, songwriter and vocal arranger - the entire writing, music & production staff have achieved something uniquely special on these recordings.

This is pop at its very best - the best of an era - if every pop album was this good, I'd buy them all. I think Unwritten should be required listening for anyone studying contemporary music styles. I reach for this album time and time again, and never tire of it, it's one of my firm favourites.

A great selection of songs - a fantastic debut4
My friend intorduced me to this album - I thought I wouldn't like it because I can't stand her brother's music. But, what she has managed to do is far exceed and overshadow any of Daniel's attempts.

Natasha's first single, "Single", is a brilliant pop song about herself as an independent woman, who doesn't need a man in her life in order to validate her existence or make her complete. If you haven't heard this very popular single by her, you must have been hiding away somewhere, as it is a radio-friendly track which had lots of attention.

Yet, I was surprised at the other songs on this album. Usually, when an artist releases the best singles from one album, the rest of it quickly becomes very unimpressive. UNWRITTEN is one of those rare things of an album with very few fillers.

"I Bruise Easily" is one of the lovliest songs on the album. It is very poignant; a touching ballad about vulnerability and how past experiences of love can be 'seen' on the outside of a person. The music is gorgeous, suiting Natasha's voice brilliantly. I can easily relate to this track, as I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve, not necessarily a bad thing, but this song puts an original spin on the subject.

"Wild Horses" is another ballad which I love. This is quite a metaphorical song, as the wild horses are meant to represent being able to be free. If you listen and pay attention to the words, I doubt you will not be moved by it.

"Piece of Me" is quite a tradtional love song. It tells of the idea that, once you find that someone who is right for you, you find another piece to yourself.

"If You're Gonna" is perhaps the most rockiest song from the album. The theme of this song is about liking the dangerous, active things about life. Doing everything to its fullest - so, if you're going to be a driver, be a race driver.

"Soujourn" is the hidden track at the end of the album. It is worth waiting for. It's quite different; there is only Natasha's voice and a guitar playing. Although it may not be the best song from the album, because of the limited instrumentation, it does exhibit her voice perfectly.

There - a run down of some of my favourite. I would recommend this album to anyone. Even if you do not like all of the songs, the good ones are so beautiful that buying it for them makes it worthwhile. Personally, I think this album proves that Natasha is a better artist than Daniel. She certainly seems to be outshining him.
