Continuing the high standards
Nearly twenty years after I first heard James Grant in Friends Again, he continues to produce really high class, well written, beautifully sung records. Back then it was twangly eighties pop but through Love and Money and onto his solo albums, he has moved closer to a mix of country, folk and pop - in the end it's just very good song writing.
At recent gig he seemed a bit put off by the fact that the audience was all late thirties and up, and presumed that we would all want old tracks from early Love and Money days. The truth is we've grown up and old(er) listening to him and I'm glad to hear him sing anything.
The new album has at first listen perhaps not so many hooks as some previous work but it is beautiful and lyrical. The backing singing of Monica Queen and Karen Matheson compliments his voice perfectly. I may end up giving it five stars but that takes more time and depends on how often I listen to it. On past experience it will be a lot.
Holy Love
James Grant has got to be the best 'undiscovered' singer songwriter in the country. He continues to produce excellent tracks, has a superb voice and plays great guitar. Most of all his lyrics are poetry. I have been listening to him since the eighties, when he was Love and Money.
Holy Love grows on you until you love it. Give The Poppy To The Poor People and Comb The Tangles From Your Hair are great examples of his ability but my stand out track is The Streets You Walk Everyday. I can put this track on repeat.
This album, like his previous ones, is very special. I am amazed he is not more popular.I urge you to give him a try. You will not be disappointed.
The best Singer/Songwriter
If you have not heard the neck hair raising melodic voice of James Grant then buy this beautiful album and give your ears a treat!
