Afterparty on the Frontline!
I can't describe this album in a way any better than Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello's lead singer) does on the back of the CD case:
"JUF's sound is New York Progressive Underground Discotheque. It comes from the need to hear music that we want, but nobody is making. Where the f*ck is, for example, Gypsy-Disco-Punk for the Afterparty, where is the Arabic-Dub-Sextura and where the f*ck is the soundtrack for a Balkan train robbery? Well, with the expertise of friends who are hip to the Balkan beat it might not take much time to make, especially if their names are Oren Kaplan, Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat from Vibromonk. So here it is. While Gogol is hard at work on the new album [Gypsy Punks]here is a project approached differently - a total Pizdetz Dancehall Meltdown straight out of Broadway and Canal with a heart the size of Brooklyn. Juice ferments into wine, punk goes into dub and party turns into afterparty... Sometimes Gogol Bordello becomes JUF... Just for a moment... And that's how we keep it together... What the f*ck style."
The album is exactly like that, every bit as incomprehensible, energetic and fantastic. If you're a fan of Gogol Bordello's brand of gypsy punk, but wonder what they'd be like if fused with Balkan dub-reggae (and who hasn't!) I'd really recommend this. And if not... try it anyway, you might find you like it!
