Amazon.co.uk Review
Following up a commercial flop is an uphill struggle, but on Getting Away With Murder, Papa Roach seem to be doing everything they can to put 2002's underperforming Lovehatetragedy behind them. The opening "Blood (Empty Promises" is an anguished, dense opener that sees frontman Jacoby Shaddix revisiting old themes and reopening old wounds, but it's performed with the sort of spectacular rock dynamics that mark Papa Roach out as something more that nu-metal also-rans. Elsewhere, the likes of "Blanket of Fear" and "Be Free" find the band moving into more bleak, gothic territory with some success. Shaddix's lyrics still stumble a line between brutal emotional clarity and 6th Form poetry: "Does anyone around me feel the same?/ Put your fist up and vent your pain," he barks, balanced on the edge of self-parody, on "Take Me". Still, it's a neat novelty to find a metal vocalist that doesn't feel the need to dress their lyrics up with all manner of impenetrable psychobabble, and it works just fine on "Scars", the LP's sure-fire hit-single-in-waiting. --Louis Pattison
CD Description
This is the third album from American nu-metallers Papa Roach and their first for Geffen since the demise of their previous label Dreamworks. Produced by Howard Benson (Hoobastank, POD, Crazy Town) the album sees Papa Roach re-invent themselves with a more punchy upbeat sound with a less polished edge. The first single to be taken from the album 'Getting Away With Murder', is also included.

Papa Roach move away from nu-metal
Finally, Papa Roach move away from the nu-metal scene and become a damn good rock/metal band. Jacoby Shaddix has a really amazing voice and in every song you can see how much effort he is putting in. Papa Roach's music has always been good but I always became annoyed by the slight rapping. Now that they've moves away from that they have become a much better band, no doubt about it. Tracks:
'Blood': Great opener to the album. Fast paced with great lyrics and sets the tone for the whole album. 5/5
'Not Listening': Great track with a good chorus. A song that you'll be singing for ages. 5/5
'Stop Looking': Similar to 'Not Listening' in some ways but doesn't stay in your head as much. Still a good track though. 4/5
'Take Me': Brilliant track that has a really catchy bridge and chorus. Great riff and another track that will stay in your head for hours. 5/5
'Getting Away With Murder': The title track and lead single off the album. Nice riff but sometimes the lyrics dont fit. But still deserves 5 stars. 5/5
'Be Free': Great track with a great chorus. Fast paced with great lyrics, a song that has to be played loud. 5/5
'Done With You': The album still going strong. Slightly slower but still excellent. 4/5
'Scars': WOW! This track means so much to me and I'm sure it does to so many other people. Absolutely beautiful lyrics that are so true. You can genuinely hear the raw emotion in Jacoby's voice. He can actually sing and he sings brilliantly. Every bit about this song is brilliant and it has to be played over and over again. The best track on the album and the greatest track in the world. Absolutely wonderful. It gets more than 5 it is just that good. 6/5
'Sometimes': Another slightly slower track that Papa Roach pull of so well. 4/5
'Blanket of Fear': Not a song that really stays in your head for long but when played you can really see the effort the boys have put into it. 4/5
'Tyranny of Normality': Great track with a great chorus. 4/5
'Do or Die': Very good end to the album with another great track. 5/5
Didn't purchase from Amazon so do not have the rest of the songs.
So why does this album get 5 stars? Well, it has 'Scars'. To be honest that song is worth the money alone. But also, the whole album is sturdy. There is not a bad song on here and the album can easily be played all the way through without a track being skipped. This shows how good Papa Roach actually are. They don't need to rap to get noticed. If you've only heard the old Papa Roach and got put off by them, don't give up. Give this album a chance, it is like they have been born again and this is a completely different band. Definately worth purchasing! Buy now!
My First Review, What Do You Think?
At first I thought this is an average album that only had one good song on the album 'Getting Away With Murder' (which sold the album to me). I was expecting songs similar to the first two albums and the new song. It took me a couple of listens to get used to this album.
This is an album completely different from their first two albums and 'Getting Away With Murder'.
Why 5 Stars?
This album is full of well written songs, every song is instantly great. Yeah sure they've had great songs('Between Angels & Insects' to name but one) that sounded great but never a great album to go with the couple of great songs they have.
This is their great album, however its not for their guitar rifts or the drum beats that made their first two albums but for Jacoby Shaddix vocals. The rifts and the beats add to Jacoby's vocals to make them even more meaningful. and never drown him out.
Every song has emotion that i've never known Papa Roach to have before, just listen to the emotion that goes through Jacoby's voice in the song 'SCARS', as he sings the chorus 'I Tear My Heart Open - I Sew Myself Shut - My Weakness Is That I Care Too Much - Our Scars Remind Us The Past Is Real -I Tear My Heart Open Just To Feel' to anyone else they may seem average but Jacoby puts real emotion into them to make them really meaningful. This deserves to be released as a single.
This album has its full of emotional songs for different feelings, 'Do or Die', 'Blood (empty promises)', 'Take Me', 'Done With You' and 'Promises' that are the real standout songs on the album.
Don't expect an album in a similar sound to 'Getting Away With Murder', it has a very different techno vibe going for it, its very different musically to every other song on the album. Its no bad thing. Its the big song to sell the album. Just don't be suprised when you buy it by the difference musically and emotionally of the whole album, from it.
A MUST BUY!
Getting away with it again
Papa Roach are one of my favourite bands, and have been since shortly after Infest. This new album is deffinatly shows off their ability and the versitility of the band.
When I first saw the GAWM video on their site, I have to admit, I was scared about the direction that they were taking. But, after listening to the song for a few (dozen) times, I had to class it as one of the best songs of the year.
Then, I went to see the band in London at the Astoria. Godlike. The whole gig rocked. They played songs from all three albums, mixing the power of Infest and Blood Brothers, the angsty Black Clouds and then the new sounds from this offering.
The songs were all amazingly well recieved, with the moshing and energy never dropping off. The new tunes were as well recieved as the old, and the power of the songs spoke for themselfs.
