Synopsis
WALKING TALL, a remake based on the popular series of 1970s films by the same title, is all about The Rock. He is larger than life, buff, beautiful, and mad as hell--ready to fight a wave of corruption, gambling, and drugs that have infiltrated his hometown. He plays Chris Vaughn, a man who is returning to his family in Tennessee after serving in the military. But right off the bat, he can tell something is fishy. The lumber mill has closed down and now there are kids on the streets doing drugs. Chris confronts his high-school rival Jay (Neal McDonough), who replaced the honest lumber business with a highly illegal casino, and is almost killed for doing so. Chris reports Jay's dirty business to the cops, only to learn that even the sheriff is on Jay's payroll. The final straw comes when Chris' nephew overdoses on crystal meth bought at the casino, and Chris decides take Jay down vigilante-style, breaking all the rules and fighting for what is right. Massive brawls with The Rock at their center, toting a large 2 x 4 as his only weapon, provide for some highly destructive, very violent face-offs. Ray (Johnny Knoxville) stands by Chris' side, providing comic relief throughout the relentless fighting, and the blond and bronzed Kristen Wilson provides some risque allure as Chris' love interest. WALKING TALL offers a little something for any fan of The Rock.

walking tall is based on the true story of a man who returned to his hometown from being a soldier to find that the twon he knew was drowning in crime and corruption so he became a sherriff to see what he could do about it and this adaptation stars the rock as chris the sherriff and johnny knoxville as the sidekick.
The film is decent enough and although based on real events we have seen this all before,the rock stutters through this with few facial expressions and looks awkward and alightly lost at times,knoxvilles jokes fall flat at times but he does a good enough job and the supporting cast all help and hinder in equal measures.
Walking tall is predictable and mindless and in that is perfectly harmless entertainment,worth a look by all means but this isnt as good as some may have you believe.

Caught Between A Rock And A Jackass!!!
If you're anything like me you're still trying to repress memories of the 80's. Bad hair, bad music and some awful movies. Among some of the more aweful movies were ones which starred the biggest wrestling (of the time) name ever - Hulk Hogan! He was in some crap wasn't he?!
So here we are 20 years later and getting a disturbing sense of deja vu as the now biggest name in all of wrestling hits the silver screen!
The difference? - He's doing some decent action flicks with actual substance.
The Rock (real name Dwayne Johnson but choosing to keep his screen wrestling name) Is now working on a movie version of one of my favourite computer games Doom. Doom will be his 6th flick after debuting in The Mummy Returns and going on to do The Scorpian King, Welcome To The Jungle (Or The Rundown in America), Be Cool and this film Walking Tall.
Now for those not aware Walking Tall is based on the true story of a man named Sheriff Pussey - an ex army soldier who would become the sheriff of his small hometown after finding it to not be so home sweet home anymore.
Just because a movie carries the moniker of 'based on a true story' doesn't always make it worth watching but this film definately is.
Chris Vaughn (They changed the name for many reasons but one reason is because The Rock is half Samoan half black where as Pussey was white and they felt the name Chris Vaughn would suit a black Pussey I guess!) returns to his small hometown after a stint in the army to discover the town is corupt. Kids smoking weed and just junkies in general and slimey businessmen who hold profit above all. He originally comes home and plans to join his father in working the towns main employment resource the old steel mill. Only to discover it's closed. After hooking up with his family (mother, father, sister and nephew) they touch on Chris being a renegade youth himself and the tense relationship between himself and his father (which I feel is some of the better acting of both parties in the flick) His nephew Pete is a typical teenager, not really a bad kid but has attitude and is doing some questionable activities! Starting to settle down word gets out and soon his closest friend of the past Ray (played brilliantly by Johnny Knoxville - beleive me no one is more shocked than me that 'the jackass guy' can actually act!) drops by for a chat. The chemistry between Knoxville and Rock is actually very good and you can believe that these 2 are old friends. He also eventually runs into an old rival Jay Hamilton (played by Neal McDonough) who now basically runs the town as he is the owner of the casino which now is the main source of employment and revenue for the town. Your eyes will start to steam up when the beautiful and smokin' Deni (played by Ashley Scott) arrives as a love interest that's one of the smaller plots of the film to be honest.
The preverbial straw that breaks the camels back is when Vaughn finds out that his little nephew was sold some chrystal meth by a dealer working out of the casino. (Never mind the fact that the bouncers of the casino almost kill him out of spite after Vaughn catches some dodgy dealings in the club and speaks up) He proceeds to go on a tear and (as The Rock says in commentary) begins to kick some f***ing ass! After a criminal trial Vaughn decides to run for sheriff and wins. Then proceeds to clean up the town and put a stop to Jay Hamilton.
I was extremely impressed by this film. To be honest I was thinking it would be your average mindless american action flick. But instead I found a compelling story with many levels and some great performances. The Rock knocks one out of the park in this one and Knoxville, as I said, who would've known the dude can do more than mutilate his own body! Ashley Scott has a 2d role really as Deni but still puts in a killer performace considering that she didn't have a lot to do except make a mans eyes pop out of his skull! In his film debute Khleo Thomas plays the role of the troubled teen, Vaughns nephew Pete very well and in the commentary The Rock will constantly sing his praises and rightly so! As I said some of the best acting moments come between The Rock and John Beasley who plays Chris Vaughn Sr. Some knockout acting there. And hats off to Neal McDonough who really plays Jay Hamilton well. It's hard to pull that character off in my view because Hamilton isn't really 'evil' he's just a businessman who turns a blind eye for profits. McDonough plays him cheeky charming smarmy and with a genuine nice side in the get go which is a hard thing to do! Supporting cast Michelle Vaughn (Kristen Wilson) the sister and frustrated mother of the peice is done very sensitively and smartly by Wilson
The dvd extras include some mildly humerous outtakes a 10 minute feature on the stunts of tghe film. A photo gallery (including a still picture of Ashley Scott in a red bra (trust me... Smokin'!!!!) a couple of deleted scenes, directors commentary an alternative ending and, as I've eluded to a cpouple of times a commentary track featuring the man himself - The Rock (and only The Rock)
The film itself is only about 70 minutes long so it doesn't drag on but at the same time it isn't rushed and is just a good flick to watch if you got an hour or 2 to spare. Yes it's got the loud boom boom and some t&a. But it also has some extemely good acting and the fight scenes hit hard and are more reqalistic than in Welcome To The Jungle.
So we smelled what the rock was cookin' and now he lays the smackdown on some hollywood roody poo candy asses!!

A good old fashioned Punch Up!
The Rock plays Chris Vaughn a retired US Special Forces Soldier who has returned home to set up a new life for himself. Yet when he returns home he finds the place he left behind is now a dilapidated crime riddled shell with his old school friend, Hamilton now running the show. Together with a mate (Johnny Knoxville), Chris Vaughn decides to take a stand against the drug dealers and take back his old town!

This movie is only about 1hour & 10min long (makes a refreshing change to the 2hr long movies which keep coming out) but saying that, that's really all you need. The film moves at a great pace with the action heating up in the first 15 minutes and doesn't let up until the very end. Each fight scene is amazingly played out using the good old fashion methods, none of this defying gravity just a large plank of wood and some hard raw punching.

This is a great honest movie, its not trying to be anything special. So just sit back, watch and enjoy a thoroughly good film!
